Hello new friends & Airhead Brethren, (if I may be so bold)
INTRO:
I am SusanQ. I bought my '84 R65Ls(RED) a couple months ago with no service
documentation and in non-running condition. Cleaned carbs and inspected
floats & jet needles, freed brake caliper, de-rested gas cap and tank,
changed all oils, brake fluid and pads, air filter, cables, tires, etc....
You know the drill.
Trying to syncing carbs has reminded me that the "order of things" should
have me checking valves first.
And, meeting several of you on Sunday wirh your smooth running machines
encouraged me to get at checking my valves (sooner rather than later). So,
I've been studying up - ain't You-tube videos grand!!
Ok, so now you have a little background and I need your opinions and
guidance.
Yesterday I removed spark plugs and valve covers, and set/viewed OT/TDC in
the little window by bumping the rear wheel while in 5th gear.
Visual inspection - everything has suffucient oily coating. I did NOT touch
any tools to any parts inside.
THE CONCERN: ALL the rocker arms are tight against valve tips with ZERO
play or clearance. No wiggle or space by hand, up, down, or . In fact, I
couldn't even detect rocker movement when bumping wheel to determine
compression side. Woe is me.
Out of desperation to witness some movement, I took 'RED' off the
centerstand and rolled back & forth (limited) and happily noticed rocker
movement at the right cylinder.
QUESTION(s): What do I do next? Loosen and adjust valve clearances on the
compression side? Or must I do something first with the rocker up/down
positioners?
"Help", she cried, knowing there was a whole network of airhead enthusiasts
at her fingertips. (Hope that made you laugh if you're still reading this
long post😁)
Ride On Baby Ride On!
TIA!
Susan from NJ
