Hedz,

When reinstalling my transmission I received sage advice that I should leave the bolts a touch loose and allow the bike to idle in gear with the rear wheel elevated. Doing this allowed the transmission to slide into its 'sweet spot' for alignment with the splines and drive shaft. There is some small measure of play in how all of components mate up. It is supposed to make the motorcycle smoother.

There are also similar 'tricks' that can be done when installing a clutch plate (on 1980 and older bikes) to make the engine run more smoothly. Since there is some play in the bolts that hold it in place. I used a dial gauge to measure the 'run out' on the clutch when I replaced mine to ensure it was centered on the crankshaft. Doing this also smooths out the engine and will address any latent OCD tendencies...

Who is heading to the PA Tent Float? I'll be there Saturday evening. Looks to be wet. Perfect!

Great write up, Chris. You made it sound simple. I'm next in line, but
going a bit further to deal with a stubborn leak that will probably mean I
need to replace the rear main seal.
