Then oops, it's not perforated, you can go home. Yesterday I had my gall bladder removed and recovery time is at least 2 weeks, maybe 3, surgery took 2 hours instad of 90 minutes. The Maryland Airheads hosted the return of the Last Days of Summer Rally the weekend of September 9th through the 12th. Some folks decided to head early arriving Wednesday afternoon. My original plan was to make it out there the same evening, but I could not manage it between work and final packing. I was able to get out there Thursday morning with my trusty 1980 R80/7 on the trailer in tow behind my trusty 1993 Volvo 960 wagon. The wagon was a pandemic purchase instigated by our own Mike Adams who connected me with it's now former owner in June of 2020. The wagon is well suited for rally management with a full 6 feet of internal cargo space and with its 2.9 liter I6 200hp naturally aspirated engine (a massive increase in power over the 2.4 liter I4 red block used in most of Volvos preceding 240 models). Once on site and settled in, the early arriving contingent managed to get a nice afternoon ride. The weather was perfect! Chris Kennedy and I wandered north into PA and found some great roads. That evening everyone was on their own with some folks heading to Bill's in Little Orleans and others cooking in camp. Thursday was a late night with much merriment. Friday morning I suited up (literally), donned my riding gear and rode most of the way back to Westminster for a memorial service for my recently departed Grandmother who managed to finish 94 trips around the sun... When I got to the cemetery I ditched the Aerostich, donned a suit jacket and was ready for the service. Mae brought her riding gear along to the service, changed into afterwards and hopped on the bike for the return run. I put in about 220 miles by the time we made it back to the rally! Most riders had arrived by the time we returned with three of them on /2s! Our beloved Eric Heilveil rode several hours in on his beautiful /2 (he is hobbling around quite nicely after his recent get-off, and it was great to see him), Craig Barnhart traveled in on his R50, and a third rider journeyed from Yorktown, VA on another vintage R60/2. By the end of the evening we had about 35 rally goers in camp. Dinner was well received- pulled chicken and pork, vegetarian black beans and rice served with flour tortillas... Another late night ensued following dinner, but it did not include me... Saturday was beautiful with more riding by most who attended. I rode with a group that put in about 110 miles down through WV. Dinner included Beef Bourguignon over mashed potatoes with kale and caramelized onions, and loaves of bread. Some remarked that it was one of the finer meals out of all of the rallies we have hosted. The sky was clear and the milky way was very visible Saturday evening. Some rally goers lasted late into the night... Sunday saw some riders gone at daybreak and others lingering until after 12PM. I was home by about 3PM. Others can fill in more details... I did not take many pictures, but have created a shared album where people can upload photos. Please add to the album. https://photos.app.goo.gl/j479GVvhgEpoiitH7 I am heading to Todd Trumbore's rally next weekend and hope to see some of you there... I will be the one relaxing all weekend with beverage in hand... I am going to host another Tech Day at my place this fall... Date has not been set, but will make people aware of a potential date soon. It doesn't have to be a tender cut... Dice into chunks between the size of golf balls and lacrosse balls. Heavily coat with salt, pepper, and garlic... Turn grill to high heat. Brown meat for full sear. Once finished transfer to a large tight sealing roasting pan. I use old Wearever aluminum toasters. Bake at 225 until almost fork tender. Add one half pound of butter to a deep soup pot and melt. Add mushrooms and sautee with a little beef bone broth. Also procure 5lbs of onions and caramelize in rendered bacon fat until they are really browned. Once all of this has been cooked, combine them together and add about 6 ounces of minced dried garlic, and an ounce of dried powdered garlic. Also add three bottles of a dark Malbec wine. Cook at a low simmer with a slightly cracked lid for an hour or so. The broth will thicken a little with evaporation. This is enough Beef Bourguignone to serve 60 hungry rally attendees! (I don't like adding carrots or pearl onions to it, although this is traditionally added) Recipe for the mashed potatoes: Cut and boil 15 lbs of red potatoes. Sautee three large bags of torn kale with the stems removed in a quart of mushroom broth... Before this roughly chop 10 lbs of yellow onions and caramelize in olive oil and butter. Once potatoes are cooked add one pound of butter and a quart of whole milk. Rough mash with salt and pepper and garlic, and add the sauteed kale and hot caramelized onions. Mash together and add some leftover mushroom broth and milk to desired consistency! This can be scaled down or up as required! Enjoy! It all came together perfectly. Great times were had by all! I am happy to report the 66 R69s, on her longest trip to date, performed absolutely perfectly over the 600 or so miles of the trip. The only glitch being a ground down side stand tang due to user error. On the way down, I failed to increase the preload at the rear when loaded and then thought tight twistys at speed were the order of the day. :-) Once adjusted and on the way home the bike performed like a modern bike with more then enough clearance to scare the heck out of my self. I continue to be amazed at how good this bike is at its intended duty. Only thing I would change is to add a larger sport tank as the stock 4.3 gal tank gives me 100-120mi before reserve when pushed hard at speed... See you all on the road! Thanks for all your work and the pics Will. My best.......... Mike *********************************************************** From: Will Andalora via Maryland Airheads? Hedz, If you missed it, you missed a good one... The Maryland Airheads hosted the return of the Last Days of Summer Rally the weekend of September 9th through the 12th. Some folks decided to head early arriving Wednesday afternoon. My original plan was to make it out there the same evening, but I could not manage it between work and final packing.? I was able to get out there Thursday morning with my trusty 1980 R80/7 on the trailer in tow behind my trusty 1993 Volvo 960 wagon.? The wagon was a pandemic purchase instigated by our own Mike Adams who connected me with it's now former owner in June of 2020.? The wagon is well suited for rally management with a full 6 feet of internal cargo space and with its 2.9 liter I6 200hp?naturally aspirated engine (a massive increase in power over the 2.4 liter I4 red block used in most of Volvos preceding 240 models). Once on site and settled in, the early arriving contingent managed to get a nice afternoon ride. The weather was perfect!? Chris Kennedy and I wandered north into PA and found some great roads.? That evening everyone was on their own with some folks heading to Bill's in Little Orleans and others cooking in camp. Thursday was a late night with much merriment. Friday morning I suited up (literally), donned my riding gear and rode most of the way back to Westminster for a memorial service for my recently?departed Grandmother who managed to finish 94 trips around the sun...? When I got to the cemetery I ditched the Aerostich, donned a suit jacket and was?ready for the service.? Mae brought her riding gear along to the service, changed into afterwards and hopped on the bike for the return run. I put in about 220 miles by the time we made it back to the rally! Most riders had arrived by the time we returned with?three of them on /2s!? Our beloved Eric Heilveil rode several hours in on his beautiful /2 (he is hobbling around quite nicely after his recent get-off, and it was great to see him), Craig Barnhart traveled in on his R50, and a third rider journeyed from Yorktown, VA on another vintage R60/2.? By the end of the evening we had about 35 rally goers in camp.? Dinner was well received- pulled chicken and pork, vegetarian black beans and rice served with flour tortillas...? Another late night ensued following dinner, but it did not include me... Saturday was beautiful with more riding by most who attended. I rode with a group that put in about?110 miles down through WV. Dinner included Beef Bourguignon over mashed potatoes with kale and caramelized onions, and loaves of bread. Some remarked that it was one of the finer meals out of all of the rallies we have hosted.?? The sky was clear and the milky way was very visible Saturday evening.? Some rally?goers lasted late into the night... Sunday saw some riders gone at daybreak and others lingering until after 12PM.? I was home by about 3PM.?Others can fill in more details... I did not take many pictures, but have created a shared album where people can upload photos. Please add to the album. ?https://photos.app.goo.gl/j479GVvhgEpoiitH7 I am heading to Todd Trumbore's?rally next weekend and hope to see some of you there...
