Fellow Heads, greetings.
I have never felt my oil cooler get even warm on my 84 R100RT..even hottest days of July-Aug.
I have examined the heat sensor bottom section housing? ( 11421335378 ) and it is pristine clean.?
The control valve moves fine...no binding. Nothing looks remiss.?
Any idea what may be wrong?? Bike runs great, no indication of oil pressure issues.
Thanks for any advice you might provide.

My R80 didn't have one but if an oiler cooler is going to cool, it has to
see engine temperature oil.  If it does, it's at least going to get warm.

Walter-

Have you ever tested the oil cooler thermostat that lives in the bottom of
the filter head? You can put it in a pan of boiling water to see if the
center pin extends as it gets hot. It may have died.

The "expanding element" is #5 (11 42 1 259 488) in this diagram. Just
measure the overall length to the tip of the shiny steel pin then toss it
into boiling water. The water will not hurt it, but should make it push the
pin out quite a measurable amount. The pin projects downward toward the
bottom plug bolt, the one that you remove when fitting the bypass bolt for
servicing after an oil and filter change.

Does anyone have a spare oil heat sensor for the R100 ?? Or know where I can get one?1984 model with oil cooler.?
My parts friend reports BMW us warehouse has none. Germany says same. Hard to believe.
I tested mine in boiling water. (suggestion from a responding Airhead....thanks) The prong extended as it should. However, it would not retract. Problem?
Oil cooler and oil lines are not blocked.
Thoughts??

No, as long as light finger pressure will retract it. There is a
compression spring in the cooler thermostat assembly to close the sensor
when it has cooled adequately. It is NOT fast. In operation, there is a
limited amount of travel to open the bypass valve. When testing the
sensor in boiling water, it extends way past that limit and can stick a
bit. It is not a failure. Just press it back by hand and install.

Friends: I had a surgery that I?ve needed for a while.  Related to the colon cancer treatments that I got over the last 26 years. This one required some stitches in places that are problematic on a motorcycle.

1986 BMW R80RT for Sale

 I am selling my BMW touring bike which I have owned since 2002.I am located in Langhorne, PA. The bike has about 45,000 miles, it is on it's third speedometer/odometer. This bike is extremely original with the following upgrades: Endurolast 450 alternator kit, done in 2009. The transmission was rebuilt with the circlip and a new speedo installed at 10598 miles in 2004. These were done by Tom Cutter, front forks were rebuilt in 2003 by Cherry Hill BMW, in 2004 I had a ?8000 mile service and the carburetors rebuilt with new jets and floats by Cherry Hill BMW. The lights were modified with duel filament bulbs in 2007 and Hella driving lights added in 2009. The windshield is from Clearview Shields with the Gold Wing vent installed, the banding is original to the bike. The seat is modified to lower it. If you were going to restore the bike I also have a new OEM seat. The extra parts are: a fresh oil filter kit, new air filter, a new clutch-cable, and an extra speedo that needs the odometer fixed. There is a complete original tool kit in the tail piece, and the original owners manual. New rubber brake lines were installed in 2003, a new Master cylinder was installed in 2010. This is a good running bike that also has a recent inspection. Forgot to mention I also have original keys for all bags and compartments.Price is $3450. Hard to find one this nice, I think it is a good price.?

While perusing the auction notices a couple items popped up which may interest our members.  Listed with Good Old Boy Country Auction (yes, name is for real) in York PA there are two separate estates offered:

1.  Amongst the ?barn find?  Jaguars on auction date 4/17 there are listed two very collectible BMW bikes.  One 1957 R69S and one 1976 R90S.  The R90S has some oddball muffler set up and also Krauser (?) fairing add ons.

2.  Auction date 5/1 along with various makes and models as well as m/c collectibles is one 1976 R90/6.

There are preview dates the day before each auction when you may show up an inspect the sale items.

An online search should take you to auctionzip.com which is a multi vendor listing site, you?ll find them there.  I?ve no vested interest in either the auction company or estates.

Now, if you buy a bike there and need a place to hide, er uh ?store? it while you convince your significant other the need for another motorcycle, look me up, I?m twenty miles from York.
