The securing nuts for the petcocks are double threaded.

The one for the gas tank (upper) is right hand thread (as they say) "righty tighty, lefty loosey".
The one for petcock (lower) is left hand thread.

The reason for this is so the crush (sealing) washer will be squeezed and sealed in the middle of each thread travel when the securing nut is rotated in the clockwise direction screwing the petcock to the gas tank.

The trick is to bring the two halves together in the middle of their travel.  Practice it a couple times to get things to come together in mid-travel.

I'm hoping that all i will need is the crush washers and while at it replace the screens
so one last question.Someone remarked that the nuts that hold the petcocks in place spin opposite of how you would think they would.Put a wrench on and turn to the left to loosen would of been my 1st choice. But again someone somewhere in my travels said , no they spin to the right to remove.I don't want t gum this up and sorry if i'm beating a dead horse.Whats the skinny on this question ?
