If you install a fork brace without correcting the real issues:?? 1. Fork brace will not help. 2. Can make things worse. Here's a quick easy way to check your fork stiction and correct it.? Take the front wheel off, remove fork springs, put front axle back in and tighten things to factory specs. Then raise and lower the axle to see if you have any binding issues. A possible simple quick fix can sometimes relieve the stiction.? Rotate one of the male fork leg tubes 45 degrees at a time for a full 270 degree rotation. and repeat the up/down procedure to feel if any stiction is relieved.? If you get some improvement with one male fork tube, then tighten the yoke clamps on that tube and proceede to the other fork tube.? Repeat process. I have had considerable success with this process with my /6 that had a fork brace that I removed.? If none of the above produces any satisfactory results, then you need your fork tubes checked for straightness and the yokes checked for straightness and holes checked for alignment.? Here's a excellent article from BMW Master, Duane Ausherman.? https://w6rec.com/how-to-measure-stiction-of-forks-of-a-bmw-motorcycle/ If you really want to read the right article on all this.....?https://w6rec.com/204-2/ My best....... Address: 20 Fitzhugh Avenue Westminster, MD 21157 We bought a new place in fall of 2019 and I spent a lot of time during the pandemic outfitting the 2 car garage into a shop for working on bikes. We also recently poured a patio in the back yard that has ample space for gathering and enjoying a few cold beverages. I will be mounting and balancing a new front tire and will be doing a spline lube on my trusty 1980 R80/7. You can join the fun, or just show up to offer constructive criticism. Some of you have seen me change a tire at Supertech which was amusing for most everyone in attendance? Jim McKinna will have a tire changer on hand, so feel free to bring your new tires for mounting? The shop is equipped with tools to perform any work on an airhead outside of a transmission rebuild or installation of valve seats and guides... I have one lift and it will be occupied with my bike for the better part of the day. the shop is 25?x25? clear inside with no center support and has room to support three lifts if anyone wants to haul one over? Plenty of random spare parts on hand as well. Plenty of parking for bikes in the driveway. I have a grill on the back patio and a fridge that can be used to store your beverages. Venison burgers for lunch. Plenty of coolers. Feel free to bring anything along you want to throw on the grill as well. Fire pit in the back yard and plenty of wood for an evening campfire. Space in the yard for tents and air conditioned floor space in the house if you want/need to crash.. Let me know if you plan to attend, so I have an idea of how much food to prep? Family stuff you know? To the valves: It is POSSIBLE that there is actually no valve clearance, the 1981-84 models were notorious for rapid valve recessions, which can be indicative of larger issues, but lets think positive: You probably had the WRONG OT, that's all. The camshaft rotate at half engine speed, so yu need to rotate the crankshaft by whatever is your favorite method, in the correct direction of rotation (clockwise as viewed from the front) until the INTAKE valve opens, then closes again. That puts the cylinder being worked on at OT Compression stroke. Now you can do your valve and rocker adjustment and head bolt retorque (always slacken 1/4 turn before retorquing.) After you finish one cylinder, rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees until the OT mark appears again in the window and you can adjust the other cylinder valves, rockers, etc. Remember, it is so simple that men can do it. You got this. -- Tom Cutter Yardley, PA www.RubberChickenRacingGarage.com See our new ignition product at www.WEDGETAILUSA.com "Normalize telling your friends that you love them. Tell them a lot. Thoughts from an OLD SCHOOLER. Pick a Sat. or Sun., time, location and post it. Get some donuts or cookies, coffee etc. Some airheads who can guide you through the proper way to set timing, valve adj., carb. sinc. will show up. maybe a Rob or Chris or even Bobdalf would. It has been taught many times at Techdays in PA, NJ, and other states. I would not rely on the internet. Hands on from a knowledgeable person is still the best way to learn before making a costly mistake. Thanks to all your help, I have ?done it?; adjusted valve clearances on my 1984 R65LS. Most of my confusion resolved while hands-on actually following and applying the guiding instruction but I will note that the greatest issue I had/have is lack of confidence; not lack of ability. Plus, I am neurotic! Aiming to be a perfectionists (What the hell? I thought I gave that up a long time ago!), I strive for ?exact? measurements, instruction following, etc. Clearly, sometimes the obvious is not so when hypervigilant. Well, in addition to my lack of experience and lack comfort from repetition, is my discovery of conflicting information that bumps my confusion and second guessing to the next level of anxiety. For instance: 1. Attempting to Identify the compression (closed) stroke/cylinder while watching and waiting for valves to open and close on either cylinder while ?bumping/turning? rear wheel and peering into small diameter hole looking for OT mark was a challenge for me and gave me the initial angst. What I found as my most helpful (ah ha!) in all that I read and subsequently experienced was simply that when OT was viewed through the window, the head with rotatable push rods is the on the compression stroke! Easy peasy as long as the push rods are not bent or otherwise resistant. Also, after adjusting the left cylinder valve clearances, I simply used the tire stem as my guide to rotating the rear wheel 360 deg and in quick order, found OT and confirmed the right cylinder was in compression stroke by the ease of which I could turn the push rods. 2. Feeler Gauges with Go-No-Go are cool. However when one has not used feelers with a range of measurement (not just singular metric and inch measurement stamps) and nothing tells you that the initial insertion is the first number in the range and the step up in size is the end range; what should be obvious and logical isn?t always to the conscientious mind. (that clearly over thinks things! Guilty!) 3. Add further confusion to this already confused girl New-to-valve adjusting person ? trying to make sense of advice to set intake clearance to .10 and exhaust clearance to .20 or in the same instruction, written otherwise as .006? intake and .010? exhaust or even ?intake 6mm? and ?exhaust 8mm?. Oh boy. And Then more uncertainty abounds by checking the R65LS manual which says after first 600 miles the valve clearances are: ?Inlet: 0.05 mm (0.002 in) Outlet 0.20 mm (0.008 in). Info on measurements are close but varied enough that when you don?t know how much the small differences matter, it dwindles confidence and or delays completion. (add the mystique of German perfection and runs like a Swiss clock vs it?s all an illusion ? sorry, don?t mind me?that?s subject for another discussion :) ) And so, I made my best first attempt at adjusting my airhead valves whereas the best part isn?t just that I have the satisfaction of having done it, but that I have a better understanding of how & why to do it and am not so reluctant in re-doing or re-checking next time. For those who might be wondering ? No, I did not loosen and retorque the rocker shaft end play nuts. I?m leaving them well enough alone. The nuts are tight with no excessive or up & down movement in the rockers. Now, before you conclude that I?ve got too much time on my hands for too much thinking, I?ll tell you that I did all that between 10-12 pm last night after a full day?s work. Thanks to all your help, I have ?done it?;? adjusted valve clearances on my 1984 R65LS. ? Most of my confusion resolved while hands-on actually following and applying the guiding instruction but I will note that the greatest issue I had/have is lack of confidence; not lack of ability.? Plus, I am neurotic! ? Aiming to be a perfectionists (What the hell? I thought I gave that up a long time ago!), I strive for ?exact? measurements, instruction following, etc.? Clearly, sometimes the obvious is not so when hypervigilant. ? Well, in addition to my lack of experience and lack comfort from repetition, is my discovery of conflicting information that bumps my confusion and second guessing to the next level of anxiety. For instance: ? - Attempting to Identify the compression (closed) stroke/cylinder while watching and waiting for valves to open and close on either cylinder while ?bumping/turning? rear wheel and peering into small diameter hole looking for OT mark was a challenge for me and gave me the initial angst. ??????????? What I found as my most helpful (ah ha!) in all that I read and subsequently experienced was simply that when OT was viewed through the window, the head with rotatable push rods is the on the compression stroke! Easy peasy as long as the push rods are not bent or otherwise resistant. ? ??????????? Also, after adjusting the left cylinder valve clearances, I simply used the tire stem as my guide to rotating the rear wheel 360 deg and in quick order, found OT and confirmed the right cylinder was in compression stroke by the ease of which I could turn the push rods. ? - Feeler Gauges with Go-No-Go are cool.? However when one has not used feelers with a range of measurement (not just singular metric and inch measurement stamps) and nothing tells you that the initial insertion is the first number in the range and the step up in size is the end range; what should be obvious and logical isn?t always to the conscientious mind. (that clearly over thinks things! Guilty!) ? - Add further confusion to this already confused girl New-to-valve adjusting person ? trying to make sense of advice to set intake clearance to .10 and exhaust clearance to .20 or in the same instruction, written otherwise as .006? intake and .010? exhaust or even ?intake 6mm? and ?exhaust 8mm?.? Oh boy. ? And Then more uncertainty abounds by checking the R65LS manual which says after first 600 miles the valve clearances are:? ?Inlet: 0.05 mm (0.002 in) Outlet 0.20 mm (0.008 in). Info on measurements are close but varied enough that when you don?t know how much the small differences matter, it dwindles confidence and or delays completion. (add the mystique of German perfection and runs like a Swiss clock vs it?s all an illusion ? sorry, don?t mind me?that?s subject for another discussion J ) ? And so, I made my best first attempt at adjusting my airhead valves whereas the best part isn?t just that I have the satisfaction of having done it, but that I have a better understanding of how & why to do it and am not so reluctant in re-doing or re-checking next time. ? For those who might be wondering ? No, I did not loosen and retorque the rocker shaft end play nuts.? I?m leaving them well enough alone. The nuts are tight with no excessive or up & down movement in the rockers. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? -- Mac KirkpatrickGlenmoore, PA "After all, what is adventure, but inconvenience, properly regarded?" C.
