Threadin' the needle...

... that's Float Needle Seats on a BING Type 53, Slide Carburetor !

Almost 27,000 miles on the carbs and the metal tipped Float Needles have worn the Float Needle Seats to the point that, the floats never quite stopped the fuel flow. Even with the petcocks OFF, the fuel in the hoses would drain down and overfill the float bowls, via the stand pipes.

Time for new Float Needles and, Float Needle Seats...

The 4-flute, bottoming tap is a M7-0.75. Above and right of the tap, are the new Seats and on the left, hand tapping wrench, 'Ladies Foot' bar, 1/2" chuck with key. Here we go...

The tap starts easily and is run in dry; chips blown-out every few turns; threaded to the bottom of the old Seat.

The chuck is positioned to allow the pry bar tang to engage one of the triple-points of the chuck, while a wood block protects the body of the carb and, provides a fulcrum...

While supporting the chuck shaft with one hand, a few 'bumps' of the pry bar with the other hand, easily pulls the Seat out...

A light coat of anti-seize in the bore and lower portion of the new Seat, is applied with a "Q-tip"; new Seat will start into the bore with thumb pressure. Plastic dowel and light duty hammer, drives it 'home' with a few taps...
