Only selling it because I am 77 years old and bought a 1975 R90/6 that reminds me of my younger days. The GS is in excellent shape and runs perfectly. I drove it 300 miles in seven hours when I went to buy my R90. 9,872 miles on the odometer. Rear tire has less than 1,500 miles on it. Front tire is very good. Some scratches on the BarkBusters and a few small chips in the paint on one side panel. Mostly the bike is pristine. The attached list of upgrades tells the tale of a bike that was cared for and designed for riding. The lowered progressive springs make it easy for me at 5?9? to plant both feet. (Original springs included.) The Camel Tank adds 7 liters of traveling fuel and the Touratech Aluminum Panniers hold more than you need. Corbin seat is comfy all day long. Lots of skid plates and protectors for off-road adventuring. Bike has always been garaged and is available for inspection in Philadelphia. Happy to answer questions. 215-922-3333 I don?t usually answer calls from phone numbers I don?t recognize. If that happens, please leave a message and I will call you back promptly. Price is $6,500 kind of like buying the upgrades and getting the bike for free. ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have found the biggest factor with clutch cable wear is improper installation. If the cable is bent severely at the barrel on installation it can weaken the cable or fray the twisted wires. I've had two clutch cables break in 20 years. The first cable broke while I test-riding the first BMW I bought- a 1974 R90/6 (with 14mm front axle). It snapped and through some creative routing of my route I managed to ride it back to the seller's house without stopping and 'power shifting' the bike. I liked the bike, so he knocked off the price of a clutch cable. My plan was to ride this bike back to Austin, TX from Dumas, TX so we removed the cable from the sleeve, turned it around and reinstalled it so the broken end was at the transmission. From there we used a short section of baling wire and a bolt we drilled a hold through to secure the cable and extend it the appropriate amount for proper clutch operation. It didn't need to bend from the cable back to the clutch lever arm and that is why we turned the cable around... I rode the bike 500 miles back to Austin the next day after doing a little sightseeing and riding around Palo Duro Canyon. I eventually bought a new cable and installed it. The other cable failure occurred because the barrel was not rotating in the lever properly. The stress caused the cable to fray and let loose. I had a spare cable with me that time. I have 'lent' spare cables to other riders as well. Check your cables and carry spares, someone might need one but you likely will not if you install it properly and look after them... These seem to work best on the the pre 247 engines where the clutch adjustment was less specific. I did have one when my /5 came to me that worked, even so I removed it. After only 27K miles I ended up replacing the entire clutch assembly and the gear box some 18K miles later on my toaster. Expert in the airhead community who specializes in drive trains coached me on the issues with this toy. Reg is a great guy and awesome racer but he does not have almost 50 years experience with our airheads on his work bench. Vech specializes in pre 1970 bikes and I am not discussing them, besides many are not putting the long haul miles on the /2 and earlier any more it is even less of an issue for these bikes. Facts are facts the bikes was designed to have so much motion and this reduces it. So, the bike is not working as intended and you know better then most keep that up and it costs money. As I said your money but as some may be inclined to follow your lead they need to also know that that when it comes to directions your skills are, unique, and detours may be in the future. There are those who understand how why why things work and what it takes to maintain them. Just adding a farkle does not mean it will do what you want it to do forever. Vech, Karl Duffner , Mike Cecchini etal all know how to maintain a bike as does the guru that told me it was best to steer clear of this bit. If you keep on it and adjust regularly you may be ok but removing 1/2 of the travel was not what the bike was designed for and my clutch and my gear box demonstrated failure from the PO abuse. The reason that makes a difference has not been discussed at all. Hedz- Crisp clutch engagement on a dry single-plate clutch requires very precise control of several factors. Two that are not so obvious are the crankshaft and transmission input shaft end float or "play." Disassembly of the gearbox and engine are required to accurately set shaft end float. Just swapping shims is NOT the answer, in fact that can cause engine seizure or gearbox bearing failure. BMW and GETRAG have not been so consistent in setting end float, and the float changes with accumulated mileage-related wear. Those of us who have ridden a lot of different Airheads will know that every bike has a slightly different clutch engagement feel. The reason for that difference is the too-wide range of tolerances that BMW and GETRAG allowed to pass assembly inspection. This relates to the EZ Clutch kit because the kit reduces disengagement travel by half, so that can combine with too-much end float on the crank AND input shaft to make a full clutch disengagement impossible, resulting in slight clutch drag even with the hand lever fully pulled. That drag will result in stiff, recalcitrant shifting, accelerated clutch disc wear, and possible throwout bearing failure. Clutch cable play adjustment becomes VERY critical to avoid these issues. Just chucking an accessory on the bike without truly understanding how it works and what the contraindications might be can end with a spoiled vacation or costly repair bill. The R90S installation is completely reliable; once the EZ was adjusted, it's remained in adjustment for thousands of miles. On the other hand, the R100RS adjustment needs to be tweaked regularly. I always wondered why, and Tom's explanation of different end-play makes sense to me. I remain a fan of the EZ-Clutch, but if it's not kept perfectly adjusted, the possibility of expensive failure is there. My purpose for joining was to learn more about these great machines. I rode my 1978 RS / Golden Cow out East last year and met some of you at the 40th GS celebration. What a fantastic time seeing these beautiful machines and have the opportunity to chat with folks from all walks of life whom share this same passion. In my professional life, I happily work as a ICU physician in a large academic setting. These past 6 months have been the most challenging of my career. Caring for any patient including those in our COVID unit is a privilege not sacrifice. The greatest challenge/risk of burnout - for myself and many others is the politicalization of this virus. For me, aside from my immediate family these Airheads are my escape. The very last thing I want to see post-call when I open my email is COVID related material. Please stay on point. Enjoy any take off or landing planes as you ride along the road :-) perhaps you will see a biplane or a plane pulling up a glider :-) on the grass strip. You are correct is a neat place to hang. However, you have misunderstood my point. Asses is easy to the airport, the point is the finish line for the timed entrance should not be just at the turn in from the access road, this is right next to the flight line at that point and we should not congregate till we get to the relative safety of the road across from the hangers, as you mentioned ?maybe 50 yards, park on the left side of the road? That way we can all be gathered to note the arrival times of our ill handling /5?s. No matter what lets remember we are representing BMW, Motorcyclists and are visitors let?s be on our best behavior.
