40th Anniversary Celebration of the R65LS and the R80GS

18-22 September 2019

Harleysville, Montgomery County, PA 19438

This will be the third and last visit for Hans A. Muth, Udo Gietl , Tom Cutter and other guests as we gather to celebrate Han’s final design work with BMW Motorrad. It is my intention to make this visit the most memorable of them all… so please join us. Briefly this is what I have planned at this stage:

Special Invited Guests:

Hans A. Muth, Designer of the R65LS, R80GS. We will be celebrating his “Children’s Birthdays”. Hans told me that both of these motorbikes were developed at the same time. That is why we are celebrating their anniversary together. With these models along with the legendary R90S and R100RS, it is my opinion and others, that Hans is the premier BMW motorrad designer of all time. Classic and timeless!

George “Schorsch” Martin, assisting Hans Muth, long time friend and owner of largest BMW dealership in Germany.

Udo Gietl, Pending, (I spoke with Udo at length yesterday regarding some medical issues) I’m optimistic Udo will attend. He may offer a presentation or just decide to kick some tires with the gang, give advice and sign autographs. We will have to be patient and wait and see, his health is priority number one. We are all wishing him the best.

Tom Cutter, worked with Udo Gietl’s race team in ’77-‘78, also worked at Butler & Smith, instructing and writing shop manuals/procedures, currently operates his own BMW repair and parts facility, The Rubber Chicken Racing Garage. Tom will offer a Question and Answer seminar for our group of attendees. Tom is on the rebound from recent serious medical attention. We also wish him the best with his recovery.

Dr. Gregory Frazier, Planning a colorful presentation covering his many globetrotting trips around the world on “ Ugly Helga”, his R80GS which has clocked over 250k miles and it shows. Greg will tell us “How He Became a Motorcycle Adventure Junkie” https://adventureriderradio.com/adventure-rider-radio-episodes/2016/7/21/how-i-became-a-motorcycle-adventure-junkie-dr-gregory-frazier

Armand Ensanian, Author of “Discovering the Motorcycle” the History, the Culture, the Machine. His presentation will be on the history of BMW Motorrad from the early days forward.

Karl Myers, BMW Master Mechanic for over 30 years, at various dealership around the country. Karl will be offering a comprehensive tech session with visual aids and answering any questions you may have.

Bob Henig, of Bob’s BMW in Jessup Maryland, Presentation topic not yet decided, but will be bringing with him two R80GS motorbikes, one will be a zero mileage ’81 R80GS to contrast with “Ugly Helga” only 250K miles on her. so stay tuned for an update.

Highly acclaimed and talented artist as well as avid vintage BMW rider, John Ritter is currently working on designing one or possibly two commemorative posters for our event and I could not be more honored. As you recall John Ritter also designed the very special commemorative poster for our R90S anniversary event. John’s collection of BMWs includes a R90S, R80GS, R69S and several others.

The itinerary is not set in stone, but this is generally what I have planned at this point:

All attendees are welcome to arrive on Wednesday or Thursday, (18th, 19th) there will be camping on site with portable toilets and shower(s). I am also working with several hotels in the area for discounted group rates. (Holiday Inn, Courtyard by Marriott as well as others )

Thursday can be a day to relax and unwind, or I will have guided or self guided tours for those so inclined on nearby scenic country roads with lunch destinations if desired.

Thursday evening, enjoy chili and brats or hot dogs and sauerkraut while watching motorbike movies on the big screen in the pavilion with your friends or while gathering around the campfire and listening to tall tales of incredible proportions, of your fellow rider’s traveling adventures.

Friday and Saturday filled with various presentations from all our special guests, 50/50 raffle both days, door prizes, autographs and catered dinner both nights. Evenings around the campfire or watching movies in the pavilion or swapping stories at the campsites. Alcohol beverages will not be provided, but feel free to bring your own as long as you drink responsively.

I’m trying to schedule in a local private museum tour or two, offering an incredible collection of extremely rare motorbikes and motorcars, which is, without a doubt one of the finest in the country, housed in several buildings with a décor as stunning as the vehicles. I may be able to schedule this on the off days Thursday or Sunday. You will NOT be disappointed !

My Bavarian Bike Barn and Motorseum displaying my 50 year collection of vintage motorbikes and related items will be open for perusing. Also vendors will be selling commemorative shirts, hats, posters, signs, decals, medallions, coins, banners, cloisonné pins, etc. If you wish to be a vendor or sponsor, please contact me directly, I will be very accommodating!

At least one, two and maybe three professional photographers will be on site shooting candid and staged shots the entire event. One will be bringing a camera drone for aerial photography. I would like to have at least one group shot of all attendee and special guests if possible. Scaffolding provided to all photographers for aerial shots.

I have also invited or will be inviting several members of the press, Vintage BMW MO, BMW MOA Owners News, BMW RA, Airhead Beemer Club, as well as Editor in Chief Richard Backus, from Motorcycle Classics magazine, who rides an iconic green metallic vintage R75 slash five toaster BMW.

Hans A. Muth and his long time friend George “Schorsch” Martin, owner of the largest BMW dealerships in Germany, have been collaborating for several months on a special highly classified project just for our anniversary event. This will be an extremely rare opportunity to witness an exclusive presentation regarding the development of the R65LS and the R80GS never revealed to the public prior to this anniversary event.

This is Hans A. Muth’s third and final visit with us. In 2014 we all gathered to celebrate the creation of the highly desirable, Superbike Champion R90S, in 2017 we celebrated the world’s first, frame mounted, fully faired, wind tunnel tested and timeless as the day it was designed, the R100RS, this year I’m am pulling out all the stops, rolling out the red carpet welcoming Hans. A. Muth and all of our special invited guests, to what I hope will be the Grand Finale while we honor the R65LS and the R80GS, the bike that evolved into the best selling motorbike in BMWs history.

A website is currently being developed with up to date information and instructions on how to register for this event. I hope you can join us, don’t wait too long, we only have room for a limited number of attendees at this very private and intimate setting.

Happy Motoring.
