That's the same day as the Tappan Zee Tech day that Kat and Paul Connell
are hosting in Blauvelt, NY.

Have you guys talked? I'd really like to attend both events, but being that
I recently was split in half once, I would prefer to avoid a repeat of that
experience.

A couple of weeks back I had charging system issues on my R90S. Really 
confusing.? I'd replaced the stator, the rotor, the voltage regulator, 
and Diode board and thoroughly cleaned all connections.? The system was 
only putting out about 8.5 to 9v back to the battery.? Not good.

Went through all the normal tests.? Rotor tested out fine. Stator tested 
out nicely.? All three leads from the stator and the Y lead were 
correct.? The voltage regulator test with a jumper showed low voltage to 
it.? Diode board also tested fine.? Totally confusing.? Then with the 
alternator assembly off I tested the continuity on the brushes.? Bingo 
on the brush assembly.? Both sides were grounding out to the stator 
cover, aka continuity.? D- should, DF or D+ shouldn't.? Looking the DF + 
side over I finally found the culprit.? The fiber washer on the inside 
had chunked and it was allowing the nut on the post to ground to the 
cover and the case.? Enough to affect the output voltage.? Removed the 
brush assembly and put new fiber washers on inside and outside. Charging 
system back to full output.

Wanted to pass that along as an additional test to do if you experience 
electrical issues.? A test that isn't normally mentioned.? Usually the 
brushes are considered the issue.

R80GS, R65LS 40th Anniversary Celebration Event

Welcome all vintage boxer fans and enthusiasts.    

 

Plans for the final appearance of designer Hans A. Muth, have been underway
for more than a year, many more details to follow shortly. This will be the
third anniversary event of this type that I have organized and it is my wish
to make this one the most memorable of them all.

 

In 2014 we celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the iconic, Superbike
Champion, R90S, in 2017 we celebrated Hans A. Muth's next project, the
highly desirable, elegant and timeless, his "Silver Daughter",  R100RS.
This September, Hans A. Muth is planning on joining us for the last time to
honor and celebrate the creations of his "Children's Birthdays", the R65LS
and the R80GS/PD.

 

The list of Special Guests to include the following, but not confirmed at
this time:

Udo Gietl

Tom Cutter

Gregory Frazier

George" Schorsch" Martin

Karl Myers

 

This event will be held at my private residence in Harleysville, PA once
again.  Owner/riders of the R65LS, R65ST, R80GS, R80GSPD, R100GS/PD will be
given preference and restricted to the first 150 enthusiasts to register for
this event.  About 75 of you have already expressed an interest, so we are
about half way there. There is still room for more riders at this time, tell
your friends and spread the word, this will be an historic event.

 

Hans Muth has been secretly collaborating, with his long time friend and
proprietor of the largest BMW motorrad dealership in Germany, George "
Schorsch" Martin, on a special project for several months now, preparing for
a  presentation, never divulged to the public at any time in the past.  I am
sworn to complete confidentiality, so please don't try ask about this
special presentation, it shall remain a secret until this anniversary event
is held.

 

I will be posting more details of other activities shortly and begin to
start the formal registration process.  To be fair to all, I have to know
who is serious about attending this event in order for me to plan properly.
I am in the process of creating a website for this event, which also include
much information and will allow you to register when logged onto that site.

 

Please take note of the change in dates, there was a recent conflict with
Hans A. Muth and Schorsch Martin, I apologize for any inconvenience this may
have caused.

 

I hope to hear from all of you and your boxer riding friends soon. Thanks

I've got a spare mismatched set of instruments.? Green faced clock and white faced voltmeter.? Both test out fine.? Both could use some cleanup and the black ring repainted.? The clock hands are faded a bit but still very readable.? Voltmeter pointer in clear condition.? Both have some grime on the glass face.?? With mount brackets and nuts for both.? These are the fairing mounted units, not the stand-alones.

 We are gonna try this again and I don't know why.  The conditions of last year were soul crushing misery. Numbing cold, mosquitos the size of small dogs, migrating worms, cruel mice, floorless tents, rampaging mold and plenty of gloriuos rain were in full effect!
  We'll be stuck under the leaking old tarp from noon on Friday til noon on Sunday

I know on at least one Uber cool R69S? that was? just put back on the road? last season will be there..Worked on by myself and the PA? Air-marshal himself !? One of the few bikes that was actually ridden to Martins for the show...!? No trailer used...

have had this camera for a long time, and I love it- but not that much. I 
bought a new used D80 off ebay with 1300 shutter actuations.
So I've got this D80 body that needs repair. Anyone interested? You can have 
it for shipping $. There is actually a you-tube video on how to repair it! 
Basically, you have to take the whole camera apart. I hate to just throw it

The new exhaust system on my R80G/S started to rust due to, I think,
getting calcium chloride on the bike when I rode the Mid Atlantic Back
Country Discovery Route, see

I had run into salt on dirt roads in Alaska and it is insidious and nasty,
causing rust seemingly forever and and is hard to wash off your bike. It is
used primarily to keep the level of dust down on the dirt roads.

So what to do? I did not want to chrome plate it, but I know from looking
into chrome plating for other used exhaust systems that chrome plating is
increasingly expensive and chrome platers will NOT re-chrome any used
parts as the "baths" they use will become contaminated, which requires
throwing out the solutions which is very expensive. So what process will
allow coating of used parts?

I had heard of Cerakote for coating guns, see

and looked into it for re-coating my exhaust.

It turns out there are different coatings (and colors)  that can be applied
for different situations such as high heat in an exhaust system.

I contacted Titanium Finishing via the Cerakote website, above, since they
seemed good and are close to me, see

It took a few trials for Titanium Finishing to achieve results they were
happy with, but just last week Matt Eccleston of TF told me they had
achieved a good coating using the Cerakote C series coating. I am impressed
by his integrity and desire to achieve excellent results.

The parts have been shipped from TF and will be mounted shortly. Whether
this system truly works will be shown once some miles are on this re-coated
exhaust, and I will report later about that, but I thought my experience
might help others.

Contact TF for the cost as it varies by how many parts are involved; I sent
a picture of my exhaust I had gleaned from the internet.

And BTW Cerakote can be custom applied in any number of ways in many
colors; do a Google search of Images, then enter Cerakote coating, then
Cerakote exhaust, Cerakote coating guns, etc. It is pretty amazing what you
will see that can be achieved.
