I have a dozen or so affirmatives and a few needing work so it looks like we'll be turning some wrenches. I've culled a pile o' parts I'd prefer to sell rather than put back on the shelves, cheap prices, come take a look. A motorcycle event close by (7 miles) has come to my attention, American Flat Track races at Williams Grove Speedway on Saturday evening. Some may be interested. As previously posted: First Annual Mason Dixon Tech Day/Social Gathering/Swap Meet-Saturday September 8th, 8:00 AM to ? at the rural home of Mark Passaro. We are located in south-central PA about twenty miles north of the MD line at the foot of South Mtn. near York Springs. Perhaps some of the Marylanders will join us, all are welcome from wherever you call home. Hoping to have some "keepers of the knowledge" present to assist with repairs or maintenance. Most standard and some special tools here, contact me if you have a need and arrangements can be made to have required tools available. Oft times now these affairs are more of a social gathering and less about wrenching and that is fine as well. Plenty of room and we'll keep the pool open! I will have table space available to sell any parts or gear (I'm emptying some shelves), clean out that horde of Motorrad gold and bring it, pass it on to a Club member. We're located at: 2081 County Line Rd. York Springs, PA 17372. Look for the ABC sign! Some notice you're coming will help in planning food and refreshments. The featured marque this year, was Laverda and I have an early American Eagle 750 GT that needs parts for my restoration. The weather was sunny and warm, maybe even too warm, the show/meet was fairly well attended, although parts vendors were in short supply, but we did meet some colorful characters. One such acquaintance was a fellow who goes by the name Lou Rocket, a friendly fellow who lives in NYC and owns the same vintage American Eagle Laverda as I. He wanted to know why I would buy such a bike, where I found the bike, and if I was interested in selling my bike. I told Lou I intend to ride the bike once I restore it. Well, in case you didn?t know, Evil Knievel rode an American Eagle 750 for a year or so, before Harley stepped in to supply him with bikes and paid him a salary. Lou was friends with Evil and he happens to be a stunt jumping rider himself. Another fellow we met was Dave Roper, from Team Obsolete, the only American racer to win the prestigious Isle of Man TT, riding in the senior class on a Matchless G50, the year was 1984. Dave is quite an interesting guy and very cordial. We were talking about the show/meet and all types of motorbikes and I brought up the subject of Moto Giro. Dave happens to also compete in Moto Giro and knows all about the event, so he filled us in on some fascinating and valuable information. Dave who lives in Hicksville, Long Island, NY, said if I held the event he would be happy to attend along with some of his Moto Giro riding buddies. I was honored. So, for the moment, I will start to plan a one day Moto Giro, with three maybe four classes up to 305cc for next year, say....late May early June. I will provide vests, numbers, lunch, etc. Format will be: Obstacle course, then a ride, break for lunch, followed by another obstacle course and ride. If you don?t have a small displacement bike up to 305cc and prior to and including 1969 and you wish to complete, what are you waiting for? Dirt? There are miles and miles of dirt roads in various states of repair - non repair. Exit the campground and turn right. Go 100? and there you are. I posted via Will, to the list of registered riders, a couple of circuits on the local dirt roads run a few years ago by an off road group. I?m bringing a few maps of the routes to distribute. You could also have a look at: http://dnr.maryland.gov/forests/Documents/GRSF_map.pdf The campground is in the forest. No mater where you go out there there is plenty of dirt! A fun thing I have done is go directly north then try and find ways to go West. There is an intervening mountain. Roads exist but are dirt. On one of them you come across an old covered bridge. I do not generally route rides there except on a couple of established roads due to past reticence among the riders to travel dirt roads. Sounds like the younger crowd is hungry for some dirt! One thing to keep in mind is that the park has been closed to bikes before because of damage from those riding off the established trails/roads. No idea what the fine might be. It looks like his troubles are behind him for now. https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2018/09/20/motorcycle-cannonballs-start-of-sta ge-10-has-a-new-leader-in-their-trek-across-america/?refer=news http://motorcyclecannonball.com/ Todd Trumbore From tsotsi2 at hotmail.com Sun Sep 23 15:07:18 2018 From: tsotsi2 at hotmail.com (Mark Lipschitz) Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2018 19:07:18 +0000 Subject: [PAAirheads] LDoS Message-ID: Folks another LDoS is in the past... An amazing turnout and a super good time. I was not at my best, Bill Lambert and I took off by 7.45am to try and beat the rain. 3 miles out of Hancock, we got hit! Rained all the way home. o well. Fabulous to see you all. Well done Brad - hope you go from strength to strength. Jim, Will - you guys rock. I felt guilty not doing anything! y'all be good - Mark From marylandairheads at gmail.com Fri Sep 28 17:54:25 2018 From: marylandairheads at gmail.com (Maryland Airheads) Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2018 17:54:25 -0400 Subject: [PAAirheads] Maryland Airheads 2018 LDoS Rally ReCAP Message-ID: Hedz, If you missed it you missed a good one... Likely one of our best yet- the event made by the people who attended and spent time together with fantastic riding, raucous merriment, and the usual meals and shenanigans. >From where I stood or sat... whether it was under the pavilion, around the campfire, near Victor's van (which I am beginning to think has a local gravitational force), or on my R80 as far south as Seneca Rocks and northward to places I don't even know the name of, it certainly looked and sounded like people were having a good time. I know I did... This year there were many new faces mixed with old friends. I rode more this year than any of the past few and my only regret is that I wasn't able to ride with more of you wherever you roamed. Many thanks to those who pitched in to lighten the load, and to my co-hosts Brad Fowler and Jim McKinna. It really would not have been possible without each of you. I'd also like to thank the folks who assisted in cutting the 25 pounds of onions for the French onion soup Friday evening. When nearly everyone had cleared out Brad approached me saying something to the effect of, " I think there is a very real danger of the interior of the van catching fire...." He said in his usual subdued manner, and I replied, "Why don't you disconnect the negative battery lead before you open the internal engine compartment." With that work done Brad quickly sorted the cause of the sparking and smoking short. It was a pinch of the trailer wiring that had been run in a precarious location. It was repaired and we then hooked up the trailer. Next Brad said he'd noticed the temperature gauge had been rising a bit pulling the trailer out to LDoS and he thought it would be a good idea to make sure there was ample coolant. It was low and when we filled it, we discovered Brad's lower radiator hose had somehow been sliced through in a very short section less than the width of a pencil by his serpentine belt. BUMMER! and WTF? Erik, Alex, Drake, and one other member of the Schuster Clan were still in camp and offered to stick around until we fixed it. After calls to multiple parts suppliers, we faced the fact that no lower radiator hoses were going to be had before Monday at the earliest. While people formulated plans Brad went up to the office and was able to source a large hose clamp. That clamp combined with a tube tire patch and small section of spare inner tube (thankfully Brad and others ride bikes that use inner tubes) formed a patch that held... it was wide enough, it was tight enough, and it was Airhead enough that we figured we'd give it a go... Once we were all set, and I had reheated the remaining potatoes and four hot dogs over the wood fire for the ravenous lot- we said goodbye to the Schusters and embarked on what proved to be an uneventful return trip. My trusty Volvo carried the load and enjoyed heading downward out of the mountains, and the might Chevy 2500 Express never skipped a beat. Brad remarked later that the temperature dial rose to operating temperature and never moved... We think it's a permanent repair, but Brad is going to replace the lower radiator hose for kicks. Somehow I ended up with the Maryland Airheads Trailer in the one free parking spot I have at my place. I took it because no one else could haul it, but I am desperately seeking a permanent Maryland home off-site. I live in town, in a duplex, with precious little parking available and I am certain there Airheads in Maryland that have a corner on their farm or lot where the trailer could be housed. I am happy to assume ownership and register it/maintain it if needed, but I can not store it. Please, someone come to my rescue. Every time my trusty Volvo gets near the thing it trembles and shakes with fear and trepidation with the unsettling thought that I might actually hook the might beast to its lowly Class 1 receiver. Again, please someone contact me with an offer to store the trailer. All that aside, I did want to let everyone who attended the rally know that I have created a shared album where people can upload and share images. I am a new Airhead...(wife agrees) from Glenville,PA, 9 miles East of Hanover,PA and only 10 miles north from the MD line. Have 84 R100RT and 96 R1100RT. Joined Airheads at Wellsboro event.? Nice folks, common interests, great machines. I just wanted to complement you, Will, for sending the amazing photos. Looks like a perfect place for a great event. Will call you to learn more regarding the MD club and details on the cam site location.? My best to all. Was going on a nice group ride in my American Legion group this morning...was 0645 when I left my driveway. , but as I left my driveway to turn on to the road, my left prosthetic leg fell of on to the middle of the road. I managed to circle the bike for a 180 and was able to mush the R1100RT on to the slope of my yard. Crawled off, really shook up and then crawled...low crawl for you military guys ( reminded me of officers basic where I'd usually barf at the end of a 100 yard fast low crawl). So, I got to my leg about 60 feet distant, felt really stupid looking in the middle of the road, my high viz riders jacket on and crawling. If a driver came by, they would probably go nuts. Crawled with it back to my driveway. Dropped my pants and found I had made a mistake in how I rolled my outer suspension sleeve . Finally managed to get my leg back on, I was exhausted and hands shaking badly. I still had time to make the ride departure time, but I could not manage to get the bike upright. I got very, very lucky the darn thing fell off right in front of home rather on some busy highway.? Gonna figure out a way to "safety" the leg using a bungee up my pants leg to my belt. My 72 yr old heart probably will not stand another one of these rather stressful events. That's my story, and I am stickin to it. Ride safe. Best Regards, Walter Craig Jr.Colonel, US Army, Ret...... and PA Airhead to boot. I got very, very lucky the darn thing fell off right in front of home rather on some busy highway. Gonna figure out a way to "safety" the leg using a bungee up my pants leg to my belt. All that aside, I did want to let everyone who attended the rally know that I have created a shared album where people can upload and share images. I only took a few this year, so please add your favorites for all to view. The first and only image is of smiling Mae serving as Princess of the rally upon the official Maryland Airheads transport vehicle... https://photos.app.goo.gl/fC2sHqgctx1MV9gw5 All the Best, Will Will Andalora Maryland Airmarshal ABC 11737 410.596.0812 www.airheads.org Maryland Airheads Online Calendar: *https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=marylandairheads%40gmail.com&ctz=America/New_York * Google Photos Links to Maryland Airhead Events 2018 Last Days of Summer https://photos.app.goo.gl/fC2sHqgctx1MV9gw5 2018 Summer Solstice Tech Weekend https://photos.app.goo.gl/YhLFV2AUHr2A6vWR7 2018 TecnhoBarn https://photos.app.goo.gl/mwbNEFZBDM2sAetJ3 2018 Supertech 2.3 https://photos.app.goo.gl/PLn3L34iSenMLnMR2 2018 Supertech 2.3 Museum Tour Day https://photos.app.goo.gl/2cJl3ylJbNaUVG2A3 2017 Last Days of Summer https://photos.app.goo.gl/JEVvywZREED7OptL2 2017 Golden Age of Airheads https://goo.gl/photos/nQkpXFtvxHmwLDek8 2017 Summer Solstice Tech Day https://goo.gl/photos/qN2YsweKParKqvXQ8 2017 Rolling Rally *https://goo.gl/photos/KJT2wXuH6eTM19wU6 * 2017 TechnoBarn https://goo.gl/photos/j1f8tByCfVaBnCUKA 2017 SuperTech 2.2 https://goo.gl/photos/XrckZWXUDRdgJGjk6 2016 Last Days of Summer https://goo.gl/photos/nYfKa6TabUay714h9 2016 Tom's Tech Day https://goo.gl/photos/dmh5pktuHvUuvAwH9 2016 Passing of the Airmarshal Flag https://goo.gl/photos/u429MPzKALcJeuF79 2016 Summer Solstice Tech Day https://goo.gl/photos/SkV19aC4Qc6vJTL78 2016 Rolling Rally https://goo.gl/photos/ZuNcyMc2DMcrghXP6 2016 SuperTech 2.1 https://goo.gl/photos/Tdg86q3VsR87FdCF8 2015 Last Days of Summer https://goo.gl/photos/w1XEMp9EkamucpK19 2015 Rolling Rally https://goo.gl/photos/GKYhLDgV4VC4jUcZ9 2015 SuperTech 2.0 https://goo.gl/photos/oq99m9x492qFFbGR6 2014 Last Days of Summer https://goo.gl/photos/WSmGi4YhUrHjY8Xt7 Note: If you are a Gmail user, you can permanently add these albums to your Google Photo Account. If not, you can simply reference the tag line of emails from Maryland Airheads to access the albums. These albums are shared, so people can add images to them. Some folders are set up, but do not contain images yet. Feel free to add relevant images and if you want to add additional images from another event, we can create albums to support new or past events. _______________________________________________ PAAirheads mailing list PAAirheads at mail.casano.com https://mailman.dudley.nu/mailman/listinfo/paairheads _______________________________________________ PAAirheads mailing list PAAirheads at mail.casano.com https://mailman.dudley.nu/mailman/listinfo/paairheads _______________________________________________ PAAirheads mailing list PAAirheads at mail.casano.com https://mailman.dudley.nu/mailman/listinfo/paairheads From will_andalora at hotmail.com Sat Sep 29 20:20:30 2018 From: will_andalora at hotmail.com (Will Andalora) Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2018 00:20:30 +0000 Subject: [PAAirheads] Maryland Airheads 2018 LDoS Rally ReCAP In-Reply-To: <389304817.2018950.1538227260747@mail.yahoo.com> Message-ID: Walter, Anyone that wants to ride as much as you do is welcome at any Maryland Airhead event! We'd be glad to have you. Perhaps duct tape as a secondary meaure? I met a guy in Colorado who had lost his lower left leg and he told a story of having his girlfriend on the back in his airhead when it popped off. He managed to bring it to a stop and she ran back for it! You call my cell if you want to find out more about what we're doing in Maryland, but we do most things with the PA Airheads, so either way you are sure to meet some interesting people. All the Best, Will 410.596.0812
