First Annual Mason Dixon Tech Day/Social Gathering/Swap Meet-Saturday September 8th, 8:00 AM to ? at the rural home of Mark Passaro.  We are located in south-central PA about twenty miles north of the MD line at the foot of South Mtn. near York Springs.  Perhaps some of the Marylanders will join us, all are welcome from wherever you call home.  Hoping to have some "keepers of the knowledge" present to assist with repairs or maintenance.  Most standard and some special tools here, contact me if you have a need and arrangements can be made to have required tools available.  Oft times now these affairs are more of a social gathering and less about wrenching and that is fine as well.   Plenty of room and we'll keep the pool open!  I will have table space available to sell any parts or gear (I'm emptying some shelves), clean out that horde of Motorrad gold and bring it, pass it on to a Club member.

got 25k on the clock.? Whole bike was gone through and totally refreshed 
4 years ago here.? Bike is non-original black with everything stock.?

LAST DAYS OF SUMMER

The Maryland Airheads invite all Airheads, riders and passengers on
airheads, and all who enjoy motorcycling to the Last Days of Summer. This
is our fifth year hosting the event!

This year, feel free to show up again Thursday to pitch camp, enjoy the
evening, and then spend a full day riding Friday. The area offers fantastic
pavement riding and Green Ridge State Park to the south and east offers
plenty of gravel for GS riders.

We?ll be at the Little Orleans Campground again where we have secured the
same large group tent-camping area and pavilion for gathering, relaxing,
and general merriment.  RV and cabin sites are also available, but you need
to contact the campground directly to secure a separate if you want to go
that route.

We?ll be ready to go starting around noon on Thursday, September 20th with
coolers for beverages, but?s that about it.  That evening we will probably
ride a short distance to Bill?s Place in Little Orleans for dinner, or you
can do whatever you like.  The idea is to get out there a day early and get
some more riding in on Friday.

We will provide dinner Friday and Saturday evenings, and we?ll have coffee
and lite breakfasts all Saturday and Sunday mornings. Not sure what we?ll
serve this year, but if the last two years are any indication, it should be
worth the ride.

Getting there from just about anywhere should be a lot of fun. Interstate
68 runs east / west about six miles north of Little Orleans, but that?s
probably the least interesting way to get there. GPS coordinates for Little
Orleans, according to Garmin?s City Navigator, are N39 37.717  W78 23.369.
That will get you close.  From Little Orleans, take Orleans RD SE northwest
out of town.  Bear right/north onto Oldtown Orleans RD SE. After about a ?
mile make a right hand turn into the campground. The campground?s website

Forest Dr., S.E., Little Orleans, MD 21766 and their phone number is:

The cost for the weekend is $45.00.  We limit the registration 60 people
which helps maintain a casual uncrowded atmosphere, and a manageable number
for food preparation. We?ll also have rally T-shirts available for $15.00
while they last, unless you pre-order which guarantees you get the size you
want. MD Airmarshal Will Andalora is handling the registration again this
year. Send him a check or pay via PayPal (please use pay option to pay a

Any suggestions? Getting the usual rattle from one of the TBs as they wear on the throttle disc shaft in the fit to the TB. Really crappy engineering.

Hi Mark,

  I'd like to bring out my 89 GS that has some electrical issue if that
would be OK.  It doesn't run, anymore, so it'll be in the back of my
truck.  Electrical stuff is hard to trouble shoot if you don't have the
knowledge.  I'll bring my tester and clymer manual along. Hopefully someone
smarter than me can guide me along.
  It also needs a front and rear main seal.  I've got to order parts for
that though so it can wait for another Tech day. I don't want to take up
the whole day.

I hope the attached pic makes it out to the PA Airheads showing the
attendees at Saturday's Jim Hopkins Museum visit.

We had a wonderful visit to Jim Hopkin's Museum on Saturday, his narration
about the many items in his museum was fabulous.

Little mention is made of his wife Tess, but she made sure all of us were
comfortable, including drinks, snacks and coffee as we arrived, as well as
lunch after the tour. She is obviously a big supporter of Jim's passion,
and we all benefit from her help.

Jim continues to expand his museum, and has contacts all over the world
including auction houses and many other enthusiasts who help alert him to
"things" about BMW motorcycling.

Jim simply could not have been more gracious.

My ride home was nice due to the light Sat traffic and the great weather,
so I hope yours was good as well.

Maybe we set up another visit in a couple of years to see what Jim has
added, and so those who were unable to attend can visit.

Subject: Moto Giro Event for 2019

I plan on organizing and hosting a Moto Giro some time next year.  As you know this is a competition riding smaller displacement motorbikes, typically less than 250cc, and older bikes, some restrict the age to 1957 or older.  I would relax these rules to 305cc and years 1970 or older.  In Europe they hold this event over several days or a week, we would reduce this to one day, followed with a nice cook-out and tire kicking session.

I?m posting this notice now in hopes of gaining interest with you and your riding friends and to give you time to acquire an older smaller displacement bike.  If this is something that interests you please let me know.  Tom Cutter is just now dusting off his 1967 Bridgestone 175cc Hurricane scrambler...what about you?

The first Motogiro d?Italia ran in 1914. It was a real motorcycle race over Italian public roads. This counterpart of the automotive Mille Miglia became Italy?s premier two-wheel road race. After World War II the event burgeoned, and by 1954, 50 different manufacturers were competing in an eight-stage event covering more than 2,100 miles. Three years later, it was all over: A fatal crash in the 1957 Mille Miglia led the Italian government to ban public road competition.

In 2001, a company named Dream Engine, run by a Ducati executive, resurrected the giro as a reliability trial. The original giro had classes for 75cc, 100cc, 125cc and 175cc machinery. The new giro had classes for the same size bikes, with the bikes limited to 1957 or earlier. The idea caught on, and giros are now being held around the world and across the U.S., including New England, Alabama and California, in addition to the original event in Italy, which is now presented by Club Terni. The rules differ from event to event, but the idea is always the same: riding small, older bikes against the clock on scenic roads.

Many people build bikes specifically for giro events. ?I first learned about giro events from a friend in Scotland, who invited me to the event there,? says Barry Porter, owner of the 1954 MV Agusta 175 CSS Disco Volante featured here. ?I went over and rode and had a blast. I came back home and went looking for an MV Agusta to ride in the giro.?

It was a 1969, and I haven't seen it since Mac McElman stole it from me in
1973. He freely admitted that he took it, but he could not remember where
he abandoned it.

Hello Bob,

The starting and ending location will be in Harleysville, Montgomery County, PA.  So I guess I will have to contact USCRA if I plan on sanctioning this event?  It?s funny that you mentioned a 305cc class, I didn?t even know that was an official class, so that?s good.  I was initially planning this as a fun event, something our riding group has never done before here or anywhere in this region as far as I can tell.  I will investigate and study the rules and do my best to have this an official sanctioned event if possible.

 

With all of your experience, I may have to lean on you for guidance as I plan this event,  I hope you would be willing to give me some suggestions.

 

I will be very busy the weekend of Sept. 8th, 9th with the Simeone Museum and Radnor Hunt Concours d?Elegance Show, but I will pass on your email to all others on various mail lists, so that they know about the your Giro eligible bikes you have available.

 

Please read Bob?s posting below regarding his involvement in previous Giro events, the upcoming event Sept 9th at Spencer, MA  and take note of some Giro eligible motorbikes he has available for those who may have an interest.  If this all goes well and I hope it does, I plan on making this an annual event.

        What would be the location of your event? The USCRA has been holding Giro's in New England for many years. They have a Yahoo Group you can sort through for info. I have two class wins in 0-65cc, 2 class wins in Scooter, 1 class win in 125cc, and 1 class win in 305cc. If anyone is looking for a Giro bike, Rice-o-Rama is Sept 9 at the spencer, MA fairgrounds. I'll be bringing several Giro eligible bikes to sell; a '66 Bridgestone B50s, a '72 Honda CT70, and a '74 Vespa 150 Super. They will all come with New Hampshire Registrations.

Todd-

A longtime friend from NJ has also participated in many Giro events here
and in Italy. His name is Frank Smith, in Hillsborough, NJ. You can reach

involved with USCRRA and their daughter Kerry is a very successful racer
there.
