40th Anniversary of the R65/LS, R80GS/PD, 12-15 September 2019

 

After reading Wayne Thompson's latest edition of "Classic Velocity"
regarding BMW's "Bavarian Shoe", I scrolled down to view an earlier edition
from last fall when Wayne attended and covered our R100RS anniversary event.


 

Wayne is a true vintage enthusiast and  writes inspiring articles covering
his interest in both classic motorbikes and motorcars.  He gave me far too
much credit in this article, but it sure brought back some pleasant
memories.

I keep in contact with Hans A. Muth and Udo Gietl on a regular basis and
both are excited and looking forward to attending next year's (fall 2019)
anniversary event, that  I am organizing  and hosting.  Hans and Udo and
others will be our special guests again, while we celebrate Han's
"Children's Anniversary", i.e. the R65LS and the R80/100GS/PD.

 

I have started the process of organizing for this event.  It will almost
certainly be Hans A. Muth's last visit to this country, as this was his last
design work with BMW AG. Plus, Hans will be 84 years old.  I am extremely
honored each and every time Hans, Udo, Cutter and other guests join us on
these special occasions.   

 

Hans is looking forward to hanging out with his devoted "Boxer Fans" and
told me he has two very special presentations he is planning, unlike
anything he has done in the past. 

 

I have not talked with Tom Cutter as yet, but I'm sure he will want to join
us again and offer a question and answer session type presentation for us.
Karl Myers plans to give one of his detailed and educational tech
presentation.  Globetrotting, R80GS rider, writer, author, Dr. Gregory
Frazier has been invited, but no confirmation at the moment. (still working
out the logistics).

 

Bob Henig from Bob's BMW will be attending and Andy Goldfine from Aerostich
hopes on attending as well. Former "Touch of Class" BMW dealer, Dave Cushing
will be setting up the ABC Airstore offering up airhead merchandise.  Other
vendors also invited.

 

So, I've started as list of attendees.  I have room for around 150 riders
and there are about 40 riders on this list at the moment.  If you are
interested in attending and you own and ride a R65/LS or a R80/100GS or
variant of these models, don't wait until the last moment, please let me
know if you wish to attend.  The owners and riders of these models will be
given preference.  I will also have a separate reserve list, for those
riding other vintage boxer models, i.e. R90S, R100RS.

I was fortunate to have attended the R100RS rally last year and would love to attend the 2019 event. Unfortunately, I don?t own one of the featured bikes for next year?s event, but do ride an R90S, R100S and R100RS.

Due to a conflict, the Tech Day scheduled for April 8 has been
moved to my (Bill Dudley, the NJ Airmarshal) house.

I have reasonable tool selection, and a lift, should it come to that, but
don't expect to do anything complex.

I can debug and fix most any electrical problem.  We can do oil changes
(including discussion of the $2000 o-ring), valve adjust (though that'll 
be a problem unless the engine is sufficiently cool), carb adjustments.

I do NOT have a tire changing machine, so unless we want to do it with 
tire irons, that's probably out.

stainless carb springs, they are good quality, work well and DO make a nice
difference.

I recently rode two bikes back to back, one bike had them installed, the
other did not and this pointed out to me what a difference easier springs
make.

Easy to install, and cheap.

Thanks, Mac. I've been stocking and selling those springs for seven years.
I had a big assortment of them at the Carb Tech Day at Rich Nagy's house.

I sell them for $12 a pair. Always have them in stock, and I install them
on every set of CV carbs I rebuild.

I have a Zumo 660 GPS setup available for sale. It is a complete setup with
the unit which has a protected screen and a foldable shade, handlebar mount,
car adapter, charge cord, instruction manual, etc.  It comes with the
ability to hook up to headphones, etc.  The latest maps were downloaded
yesterday.  A full description is on the Garmin website.  Sorry, but the
lifetime map updates are not transferable.

I've used it on the bike & in the car and it is an excellent upscale unit.
The original purchase price was about $600 and I have it for sale as a
complete unit for $250. I can be contacted via e-mail or call 908-500-1888.

You need to be VERY observant when you stop at a gas station to refuel your
vehicle - car or bike.

I traveled to the Wellsboro, PA area yesterday and stopped at a Sheetz to
refuel my car.  They have "blender pumps" where various octane are dispensed
through one nozzle, depending upon the octane you select.

At this Sheetz, near the intersection of PA 6 & 15, you had the choice of 3
nozzles.  The yellow covered nozzle was "flex fuel" which contained from 15%
to 83% ethanol.  The blue covered nozzle was E15 (15% ethanol) & was 85
octane. The green covered nozzle was for the 10% ethanol in octanes 87, 89
or 91.

There was posted a small note stating that E15 was for 2001 & later
vehicles, but who pays attention to those little notices/stickers?  You DO
NOT want to use E15 in your motorcycle or any small engine such as a
lawnmower, etc. Of any production year. I personally know that E15 makes my
truck run poorly & it is a later model than 2001.

I am sure that this station was not the only one of its type in PA. There
are many other name brands out there that probably do the same.

Although E15 was developed to save gasoline I understand cars/ trucks using it get less gas mileage  and poorer performance

On the other side many Royal Farms now offer ethanol free gas at certain 
pumps.? You have to pay more to not have ethanol but it's well worth it 
on our aged engines!? What I find disturbing is that we pay through our 
taxes and subsidies to have ethanol included and then we get to pay more 
to have it removed.? God Bless American politics.

There's been many groups fitting this. The poor signage only makes it worse. Joe average consumer is going to get burnt. Burns my ass that we subsidize the production of the ethanol to begin with.

if you are not already aware of it, for the location of ethanol free stations, visithttp://www.pure-gas.org .  it's a web site that's maintained by 'joe average citizen' that lists the location of all the ethanol free stations in your area.  the only problem i found is that it doesn't tell you if it's 87, 89 or 91 octane.  i'm in the harrisburg area and there used to be only one station that sold it near me.  luckily it's 91 octane and my '83 r80rt runs great on it.  i just fired it up after storing it in an unheated shed all winter (with stabil) and it fired on the second attempt.  i'm happy! 


and now i find there's actually three stations within about 10 miles of me.  guess more people are demanding it.  life's good!

non ethanol gas or are out of business, and also lists "too many"
businesses that don't have pump gas ethanol free gas, they only sell it in
quarts and gallons, so IMO it is sorta misleading.

Not sure if any of you (besides Ed) are in the Central PA area (Harrisburg/Carlisle/York) but several Gulf stations and a few independents carry ethanol-free, 91 octane.  It will cost you $3.50/gallon though.  Run it in all my small-engined power equipment and vintage bikes.  Don't even bother with Stabil and have had no problems come spring ?

pure-gas.org is the definitive list of ethanol-free gas stations in the U.S. and Canada


site is that it is out of date so it lists businesses that no longer sell
non ethanol gas or are out of business, and also lists "too many"
businesses that don't have pump gas ethanol free gas, they only sell it in
quarts and gallons, so IMO it is sorta misleading.

It's not an Age or Forgetful issue.? And I did take my Geritol yesterday.

The list was attached when it made it to my ISP's server and still there 
on my Bcc.? Really it was.
