The Skylands folks had a discussion about Spot vs Garmin In-Reach satellite trackers.  This link was then passed on as a followup. It is a extensive discussion of the differences between them and also the use of Spotwalla website (as a way to show friends you path).------------------very interesting!
----------------- I have used Spotwalla before with  cell phone tracking.... and Don E has use Spot.  Currently I use my iPhone Find-Friends for my wife and daughter to track me..This is certainly not as good as a satellite tracker device since cell service isn't everywhere. iPhone FF only shows where you are located at any point in time and not a history of where you've been.    I use my Garmin Zumo to display my tracks and after a ride I down-load the tracks to my PC to document my trip.  The advantages of a satellite tracker & spotwalla are:  good coverage most places, messaging,  and history of tracks/trip available immediately.  The disadvantages are: up front cost for devices, monthly subscription  and usage costs.-------------------
