My last trip to NJ I brought my totally restored 1979 BMW R100RT here and it is in my trailer & I need help to move it into my garage. I am physically unable to do so & I will be undergoing arm surgery this next week in Durham at Duke.Since I am new to this area, I do not know if there are any airheads nearby who would be willing to spend a half hour assisting in this project.I have now retired from handling the Airstore and have a good person who took over. His name is Ernie Baragar and all the Airstore items were sent to him in Reno, NV.I sure would like to get the bike moved before I have the surgery. Monday I go for testing and the surgery is Thursday.I can be reached at 908-500-1888 and my address is 1016 White Oak Dr, South Boston, VA 24592. I am 2 miles off Route 58, 30 miles east of Danville. Simply just pulling the float bowl off and removing the main jet and pilot jet, cleaning them and balancing the carbs may be all you need. Getting a rebuild kit from Bing International online (Kansas) or your BMW dealer (which I have read is actually better and maybe cheaper!) You get new diaphragms, needles, floats, etc. and can even get the DVD on how to do a rebuild. When I rebuilt one of my two airhead?s carbs, I even had the local BMW shop drop the bodies and parts into an ultrasonic cleaner before reassembling. Bottom line from my experience is to start with the simplest and less costly approach...as the Airhead Cannons state ?. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... He's going to drop the bowl on the right carb and replace the O-rings on the idle jet, idle-mixture screw, and the main jet stack, and spray everything thoroughly with carb cleaner. If that doesn't solve the problem, I'll help him take apart the rest of the carb and clean it, as well as replace the throttle-shaft and enrichener O-rings, and whatever else needs attention. BTW when I got to his garage on Friday to take a look, the bike had fire on the (externally-grounded) right plug, and we could see gas getting to the carb (clear fuel line). But it would only run on the left cylinder, us deducing this by feeling the puffs of cold air from the right exhaust. But with the enrichener engaged, the bike would actually fire on that side, albeit roughly, which pointed us to the carb as the culprit. Mike's a bit daunted at the prospect of completely disassembling the carb(s), so he wants to do this less-invasive cleaning / restoration first. My time is more limited, so he's going to try this first and then if needed I'll help him with complete disassembly and rebuilding. Last Thursday we set the valves and after swapping out the faulty diode board (bad diode), got about 13.5v at 3K RPM with both the mechanical and an electronic regulator, we found no fire on the RH cylinder when trying to do a carb synch. Swapping wires, plugs and coils and a shot of brake-kleen in the intake did not result in any fire. Running out of time and hoping to avoid rush hour traffic stopped us at the point of removing the carb. We did put anti-seize on the exhaust nuts which were thankfully not seized and lubed the throttle grip which was pretty well gummed up. There is a need to get some solid mounts for the diode board for better grounding and to replace a broken rubber mount. I will return in about a week with my carb stick, compression tester and timing light to get it tuned up along with a grease gun for the swing arm bushings. For future work we may want to look to a day at my shop for a clutch spline lube, and possible tire change. A mini tech-day sounds like fun. Can speak to a /6 but I replaced a set of Progressive springs with Gold Valve emulators in my '71 CB750 (there, I said it ?) and the improvement was definitely worth it. I had to buy a set of linear wound springs, a set of Racetech's damper rod adapters ($20 pair of machined spacers that sit between the emulators and the tops of the damper rods), and drill a couple holes in the bottom of the damper rods but aside from this the install was a by-the-book fork disassembly / reassembly. Some bikes require brazing of the damper rods if the bike has forks with external rebound adjusters. Afternoon Eric. I have added Racetech emulators to my my R100RS, R100RT and R100GS. The transformation with the handling is remarkable. I have not done it on a /6. Your need emulators and matched springs from Racetech. It?s probably about $350 all up with oil. Racetechs website can provide all the information and part #?s. I scoured the web and found good pricing from Amazon and Ebay. The alternative is to buy my old R100RS from Chris Rizzo. It has Gold Valve emulators and springs plus all the mods you could ever want. It replaced the exact same bike but with less miles on it. My present bike with the Racetechs is night and day great compared to the old RT . It wasn't the mileage on the old RT that made the suspension lacking. It was just not great to begin with. I fiddle flipped with viscosities of fork oil on the old RT, and nothing seemed to help. The RT with the emulators is a blast. You will not be disappointed. A dramatic improvement. I hope this helps. Completely transformed my /6 forks from something out of the 70's to forks of (at least) the 1990's with real compression and most importantly REBOUND. Bill Lambert and I did our RS forks and very happy with the results.? Best $300 I've spent in 20 yrs on my R90S. Matter of fact, the forks were such an improvement that I didn't realize how bad my Koni adjustable shocks were and led me to discover that after 20+ yrs they were still on the #1 setting (out of 3).? Simple click to #2 setting and my bike felt well balanced and wonderful. Mt $.02 says do it.?? My best........ I don?t have the emulators but can say that at a rally tech time Tom Cutter was not a fan of the Progressive replacement fork springs. I had been riding my new to me ?84 RS for about 4 years when I began to become frustrated with the bikes ill mannered handling and my continued failed efforts to sort it out. An unnerving weave or squirm in the chassis had been cause for concern. Most notable on protracted sweepers running on a slight downhill mountain grade. Neutral or off-throttle in particular. Uphill, throttle open, not so much. Nonetheless, the bike would pick up a difficult to control wobble or oscillation in the chassis. Unacceptable, I thought. RaceTech emulators were installed, various fork oil weights were tried. Harley Davidson Type-E proved positive. The ride quality did not improve in any noteworthy way. Bumps in the road are still met with equal feel at the handlebar. The handling however has been nicely improved. While enjoying the mountain pass, the bike is far less likely to exhibit wobble or weave. Dare I say, the recalcitrant rubber cow has been exorcized. Just passin? through. What else are we going to do with ourselves. This is a very good time wasting project with cooler temps coming soon.
