Although NC is in the process of implementing phase one of opening up, the guidelines restrict gatherings of more than ten people, It may be different a month from now, it could be wide open....or it could go back to lock down. The uncertainty is a problem. There are also two major risks involved. Risk one is being a point of transmission. We like the folks who come to the Gathering, and we don't want to take the chance of them getting infected there. The second risk is financial. Last years washout depleted our rally fund. We normally plan for 130-150 people, food for that size group for two meals is not cheap. This year there is no way to project how many folks would venture out. Just from the number of emails and phone calls I have gotten, I know folks are craving a road trip and and social gathering (as opposed to distancing). We would like nothing better than to offer that opportunity, but it ain't happening this year. However, you could contact a few friends, select a destination, and have your own mini rally. Take some photos, write a couple of paragraphs and send it to BJan for the Airmail. "What I did instead of the Gathering of the Clans", Brent Hollowell , owner of the camp ground we use for the Gathering, told me he would be open for business, but you will be responsible for your own food and beverage. Please use your mailing lists, facebook, or other social media you use to pass this information along to folks who might not look at the calendar on the Airheads web page. Hey folks, stay healthy, be happy and with any luck at all, we will have the Gathering next year. Charlie #13 From dud at casano.com Sun May 10 14:57:07 2020 From: dud at casano.com (William F. The "From" field will show the original "From" value of the person who sent the message. (Formerly it would say "real-name via VAAirheads".) Their will no longer be a message footer added that has instructions for unsubscribing. However, this information is in the message headers, and your email client (Outlook, etc) should have a button that says "unsubscribe from this mailing list" somewhere. To reply to the entire mailing list, use "Reply-All" in your mail client. (This is not a change, as that was the setting for VAAirheads prior.) Mike Friedle especially seemed to enjoy booking the music programs for the BMW MOA Rallies. He seemed to know a lot about the bands, what kind of music would be most enjoyed by the rally attendees, and he absolutely loved planning those musical events with all the mind-numbing details, complications, and last-minute-changes involved. I remember him standing at the gate of the Vermont Rally two or three days before the Rally opened, checking his list of workers for each person arriving at the gate. I arrived at the gate on my R60/7 behind two rough-looking guys on oilheads wanting to crash the pre-rally working group. Those two were apparently hoping to camp and drink and party on the rally-grounds despite the fact that Mike had announced in advance seventy-dozen times in every forum available that early admittance would be denied to anyone not working to prepare for the rally. Those two guys yelled at Mike, told him they had ridden a thousand miles, told him they had no place to stay, told him they had always checked in early at rallies before, told him that he was a rotten decision-maker and worse, etc., etc. Mike coolly and calmly and politely and firmly told them there was no admission, no admission, no admission. Finally they realized he could not be intimidated nor influenced by them acting out. They turned their oil-heads around (with Mike strategically located between them and the rally grounds) and they roared off in disgust. I came to the gate next and Mike was just as friendly and unflappable with me as if nothing had happened. My name was on his list and he welcomed me in and ushered me through the gate with a smile! The last time I remember talking to Mike Friedle was at the Saturday Banquet at an Airheads Pennsylvania Super Tech. Mike had a pair of big glasses or goggles that distorted the vision to make the wearer disoriented and clumsy like one would be while intoxicated from drinking alcoholic drinks. Mike was offering to everyone the chance to wear the special glasses and try to walk along a straight line on the floor. His main point was that we may feel okay after drinking, but we are probably not nearly as functional as we think. After each person's failure to walk the line -- and everyone did fail -- he stressed that it was not a good idea to operate any motor vehicle, and certainly not a motorcycle, after drinking alcoholic beverages. Our club has a void now without him. All of us who met him through the MOA, the ABC, or otherwise, will certainly miss him. If anyone has a better idea of price, please let me know, I have a blue 1983 RT with luggage and I live in Arnold MD, about 8 miles from Annapolis. I bought the bike in the early 2000's. It has 41,200 miles on it. The year before the Bloombury rally, I had the heads done because of the recession problem. After 1000 miles, the wrist pin circlip gave way on one of our MD rallies in Hancock MD. Tom Cutter had the cylinder relined for me. Mark Dulaney helped with the bearings, replaced the timing chain, just because we were there. Mark thought the crank looked ok. I rode the bike to Bloomsbury without any problems other than it was hot as hell. After that I had some problems with cervical stenosis, and my MRI is a little scary to be riding on a motorcycle. Then rotator cuff problems, followed by heart valve replacement and more complications. Finally I got the nerve to ride the bike again, took it to Chris Kennedy's Technobarn and one of the attendees who came in a car, backed into it in the driveway. That put some small short cracks in the windscreen and a small crack in the fairing. I replaced the mirror and it is a cosmetic, not a functional problem. That seemed like a bad omen to me and I parked the bike and drained the gas tank. The death of my friend and neighbor, Mark Lipschitz absolutely killed my nerve to get back on the bike. I was thinking of selling the bike to Bob's. I am moving in July and I absolutely need to get rid of the bike. Having been out of the hobby I am not certain what to ask, $2000? Since most (if not all) club activities are being cancelled, folks are gonna have to come up with their own. Now would be a good time to get out and scout around in your area for potential sites to have an over night get together. A simple but possibly fun activity for members in your area. Sponsor a day ride. A good way to meet with other members in your area. Design a face mask that one can drink a beverage with. I have tried cutting a small hole for a straw (compromises the face mask) and a hydration back pack (yucky tasting beer that went flat quickly). Hard to beat a bottle or can that goes directly to the lips!! If you come up with some activity that you would like others to join in, you may use this list to contact all members in VA, so long as they have kept their email addresses current with the ABC Membership Team.Ride safe and be safe, Charlie #13--- Forwarded Message ----- From: GARRY NEWBY To: airmarshals at airheads.org Sent: Thu, 21 May 2020 10:53:38 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Covid statement The bod would like to see this in airmail and on the website. I will also post this to the AM's list. Thanks Garry in Oregon ************************************************************************************************** BOD COVID STATEMENT To the members and affiliates of the Airheads Beemer Club from the Board of Directors. We have all heard this many times by now - We are dialing with difficult and unprecedented circumstances from the COVID 19 Global Pandemic. From our families to our local communities and at a global level. It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to do our part in this crisis, and that has resulted in cancelation of nearly all club activities especially those involving that in-person camaraderie that we are all so fond of. While we all hope and plan to see things return to some sort of normalcy, and to avoid cancelation of even more events in the future, the club leadership feels that we should as a club come together on some basic guidelines. We are not health experts, and do not intend to establish rules policies or engage in the political discourse surrounding this crisis. Many of us are anxious to hold tech days, and annual gatherings this season when health experts are asking everyone to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people. In some areas, state and local governments are banning such gatherings for anything other than essential activities. Members are faced with the dilemma of the loss of these wonderful gatherings, or complying with governmental restrictions and also protecting the health of their members. If a state or local governmental order prohibits having an in-person meeting, the decision on whether to have the event is easy: You should not hold the event. The BOD reccomends that you follow the governmental orders. If there are no explicit restrictions, the club leadership hopes and expects that all members organizing and hosting events will follow all local guidelines for the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), gathering sizes and social distancing. The club does not officially sponsor or support any gatherings that do not fully comply with state and local guidelines. Please be safe, protect your friends, family and fellow members and stay healthy for a bright future and prosperous club going forward.Garry Newby Chairman BOD Airheads Beemer Club Inc -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
