<div dir="ltr">Todd-<div><br></div><div>The reason that the EZ Clutch works well on Karl's R90S is that I knew that he was planning to use it when I rebuilt that engine and gearbox. The reason that makes a difference has not been discussed at all.</div><div><br></div><div>Hedz-</div><div><br></div><div>Crisp clutch engagement on a dry single-plate clutch requires very precise control of several factors. Two that are not so obvious are the crankshaft and transmission input shaft end float or "play." Disassembly of the gearbox and engine are required to accurately set shaft end float. Just swapping shims is NOT the answer, in fact that can cause engine seizure or gearbox bearing failure.</div><div><br></div><div>BMW and GETRAG have not been so consistent in setting end float, and the float changes with accumulated mileage-related wear. Those of us who have ridden a lot of different Airheads will know that every bike has a slightly different clutch engagement feel. The reason for that difference is the too-wide range of tolerances that BMW and GETRAG allowed to pass assembly inspection.</div><div><br></div><div>This relates to the EZ Clutch kit because the kit reduces disengagement travel by half, so that can combine with too-much end float on the crank AND input shaft to make a full clutch disengagement impossible, resulting in slight clutch drag even with the hand lever fully pulled. That drag will result in stiff, recalcitrant shifting, accelerated clutch disc wear, and possible throwout bearing failure. Clutch cable play adjustment becomes VERY critical to avoid these issues.</div><div><br></div><div>Just chucking an accessory on the bike without truly understanding how it works and what the contraindications might be can end with a spoiled vacation or costly repair bill.</div><div><br></div><div>When somebody makes a recommendation, and repeatedly makes an Appeal To Authority argument by name dropping, beware.
