<div dir="ltr"><div dir="ltr">Clutch disengagement debates aside... I have found the biggest factor with clutch cable wear is improper installation. If the cable is bent severely at the barrel on installation it can weaken the cable or fray the twisted wires. I've had two clutch cables break in 20 years. <div><br></div><div>The first cable broke while I test-riding the first BMW I bought- a 1974 R90/6 (with 14mm front axle). It snapped and through some creative routing of my route I managed to ride it back to the seller's house without stopping and 'power shifting' the bike. I liked the bike, so he knocked off the price of a clutch cable. My plan was to ride this bike back to Austin, TX from Dumas, TX so we removed the cable from the sleeve, turned it around and reinstalled it so the broken end was at the transmission. From there we used a short section of baling wire and a bolt we drilled a hold through to secure the cable and extend it the appropriate amount for proper clutch operation. It didn't need to bend from the cable back to the clutch lever arm and that is why we turned the cable around... I rode the bike 500 miles back to Austin the next day after doing a little sightseeing and riding around Palo Duro Canyon. I eventually bought a new cable and installed it.</div><div><br></div><div>The other cable failure occurred because the barrel was not rotating in the lever properly. The stress caused the cable to fray and let loose. I had a spare cable with me that time. I have 'lent' spare cables to other riders as well.</div><div><br></div><div>Check your cables and carry spares, someone might need one but you likely will not if you install it properly and look after them...</div><div><br></div><div>Will</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><div><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_signature" data-smartmail="gmail_signature"><div dir="ltr"><div><div
