Wrote an obvious BMW fan. BMW foresees the R18 to become as big a seller as the GS line and they are shipping half of their production volume to the US. Oh BMW, where do I begin? First let's define success for BMW motorcycles USA. For them a couple of hundred units is considered a good selling model. If a bike sells 3 per dealer (~500), OMG, we have a blockbuster hit. Back in Sept. BMW announced that they think a small group of millennials with deep pockets who are into cruisers may not be as loyal to H-D or any other American brand and they might consider an alternative option. Let's break this down. Rich American millennials who are actually into heavy cruisers (instead of lighter cruisers like the Sportster or urban commandos like '70s BMWs, Triumphs and Hondas) are going to buy thousands of this bike that has little sex appeal (compared to a mega chick- and bro-magnate like H-D) to help it reach the sales volume of their best selling GS line that covers 3 engine platforms in 6 different models with an entry price of $5K.<br clear="none">

Anyone who says 'I hate to be right' is a big fat liar. I've been preaching this bike's marginal appeal since day one. For me it's not a question of being right, it's just that the US market has a distinct pulse that I have a sixth sense about and am intimately familiar with. The rules that guide our market don't exist anywhere else, not even in Canada. And Euro bike managers have never understood it. Euro brands have miniscule footprints here (~2%), because the US doesn't go big for their products. US likes H-Ds and the Japanese. I've mentioned in the past that the R18, geared for the US market, is 15 years too late. It should have been launched before the 2008 cruiser marker meltdown (and the US market in general). Will it sell here? What's our bar for a hit in the US? For Samsung it's 3M of a phone, for Harley it's 30K of a bike, for BMW US it's 3 of a model per dealer. I think it will be a "hit," as long as a bunch of well-to-do millennials named Kyle or Cooper decide that posing with this bike will increase their Instagram followers. Not counting of course a few BMW riders who will be attracted to this bike, because of the blue and white roundel. Although BMW designed this bike for conquest of riders from H-D, it will ultimately only attract current BMW fans in the US. If BMW was serious about a chunk of the US cruiser market they should have bought Indian when they had the chance. They won't get it with this bike nor with the cramped touring versions in the slideshow above.</span></span></div>

I may spot several Tesla Model 3s in a span of 20 mins, but not an e-moto. And this is supposed to be the largest motorcycle market in the US. I did see a couple of bargain basement commuter type e-motorcycles, but those don't impress. However, a week ago I spotted an odd looking sportbike at the light that I couldn't instantly ID. I noticed it's an Energica Ego. I wanted to find out if it was a dealer demo or a private sale (I missed the plate) so I asked the rider: "Did you pay for it?" He grinned, nodded yes, gave a thumbs up, then the light changed and took off. I hope it's a sign of more e-motos on the roads, since the future is electric. In fact California announced they are planning to ban the sale of ICE (gas burning) cars, light trucks and off-road vehicles (bikes too) by 2035. This mandate is consistent with trends emerging in major European cities for eventual </span></span><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-size:18px;">outlawing of a</span></span><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-size:18px;">ll polluting vehicles.<br clear="none">

With engines out of the way, the future of vehicle manufacturing will become like the tech industry. It will not be any different than building a computer or mobile device. All computers and mobile devices run on exactly the same platforms, they function by chips and drives made by a small group of parts suppliers. The differences are operating systems, capacity, features and designs. That's all! Vehicles will become exactly like that. All future electric vehicles, no matter the number of wheels, will be based on the same overall platform relying on maybe 2 or 3 power plant parts suppliers. The rest is just design, interior materials, power ratings and features. Bikes will not be an exception to this rule. Brands that are known as engine makers such as Ducati, Honda, H-D and BMW all are lauded because of their mastery of creating their unique power plants. With no engines they're just left with batteries and unified drivetrains, exactly like the tech industry. I can't wait for a world without ICE, but that's at least 70 to 100 years away. Since banning the sale of new vehicles will have no immediate impact on hundreds of millions of ICE vehicles already on our roads. </span></span></div>

They are planning to offer other higher spec models under the new M moniker. M1250GS anyone? The M badge on bikes makes sense because it taps into BMW riders' ample sense of vanity. Speaking of the GS, BMW also released a slightly updated R-GS line for 2021. Last bit of news on BMW, they are down by about 5% so far, which isn't bad considering.<br clear="none">

It took IMS a long time to announce the cancellation of this season's shows due to COVID. They waited until the fall to also let us know that they are totally changing their format for next year and planning to become an outdoors festival, sort of like the BMW MOA rallies. They are also expanding the show to all things outdoors (ATVs, Side-by-Sides, RVs) and e-bicycles. Expanding to beyond just bikes in a shrinking market will ensure their survival.<br clear="none">

Speaking of bike shows AIMExpo has cancelled the 2021 show as well and is planning to restart the following year. There is a good chance that next year's shows will not enjoy the type of attendance from pre-COVID days, so it's a good idea to wait until 2022.<br clear="none">

We reported in the last issue that H-D was rumored to leave the Indian market. They are in fact closing their factory due to low sales and planning to partner with a local brand, potentially Hero, for distribution instead. H-D also will not be selling any more Sportsters in Europe, since they won't meet Euro 5 regulations.<br clear="none">

VW Group is planning to put Ducati for sale in a few weeks. We'll have more news plus analysis in the next issue. Ducati to unveil the new Multistrada V4 in November. They claim their new V4 engine is lighter than the previous 1260 V2. The new Multi will also receive Adaptive Cruise. Although BMW announced Adaptive Cruise for bikes first, but Ducati will beat them to the showrooms with the 1st on a production bike.</span></span></div>
