The shock is between the two fork legs and does the damping and springing work - the fork-leg has nothing but air and a bit of oil in it. That does look like a decent leak. There are tricks that you can use sometimes to save replacing the seal (involving a piece of 35mm film stock, or a specially made plastic piece that slides between the seal and the fork tube and clean out anything that might be caught in the seal.)? Sometimes the seal does need replacing - and it isn't a huge job - but if you've never done one (I'm guessing) you might want to take it to Mike and have him do it. I wouldn't worry about riding it over to Mike - you won't damage anything - just clean off the oil, and if you really want to keep oil from blowing back on your leg, tie an old rag around the top of the fork slider (the bottom part) so it catches the oil. As recently announced in the newsletter, the FluffyButt riding competition is back. In case you missed it in the newsletter, I'm sending out the announcement again here. The goal of this competition is to get everyone out riding those wonderful machines we all own. The game will consist of a list of 50 objectives around NJ, Eastern PA, and Southern NY. You will ride to the objective and take a selfie of you and your bike with the objective in the background to prove you captured that objective. Each objective will be worth some number of points. There will also be opportunities to obtain points by riding to places like rallies. The contest will run from now until November 30, 2021, the same day the annual mileage contest ends. Not only do you get to ride your bike more, you also have a shot at getting a gift card to Cross Country BMW. The top three finishers will receive gift cards. There will only be three awards given, the club isn't made of money, after all. But my hope is that you will all challenge yourselves to get as many of these objectives as possible. NJ and the adjacent areas of PA and NY have some really beautiful riding. Even within the club, there are smaller groups of people that typically ride together. Challenge your friends. See who can ride to more objectives! If you?re interested in competing and getting some more riding in, send an email to fluffybutt2021 at googlegroups.com with your full name and tell me you?re interested. I?ll add you to the Google Group and you?ll then receive a Welcome email to the group with some links to documents for the contest. ***There was an issue with the Google Group accepting emails. I think I've fixed it. If you already tried to email the Google Group and had problems, please try again and let me know if you have a problem. Good luck everyone. I hope everyone in the club joins up! Jonathan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I was heading north on RT36 near Keyport. Riding in the left lane. Came up to a stoplight when I noticed four or five bikers with pagan jackets on in the right lane. I had heard about them but didn?t think much of it at the time. At a red light I started creeping up on the left, a red pick up truck that was behind them kind of moved over in my lane & opened his window. He said something to me (I didn?t really understand at the time) but I sort of held back and then I realized he was telling me ?DONT PASS THEM!? (Later I found out he was with them). My band played at the Blue Rock Cafe in Keyport. It's a pretty rough place; the door has a "No Colors" sign at the door. As we were setting up our gear, about a dozen Pagans came in (wearing colors); a mix of men and women. It turned out to be one of their lady's birthdays. We had enough classic and southern rock tunes to keep them entertained. They seemed to be enjoying the show or at least tolerating it. One of the Band's singers called out "You're The One That I Want", you know, that song from Grease. I was game and started the piano intro.................... next thing I knew there were Pagans up on the dance floor dancing their asses off, pretty entertaining. Even "1%ers could not resist the allure of a cheesy Broadway Musical, or a John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John movie. Greg, the Pagans are very active in NJ. It is best to stay clear. One of their head honchos is my neighbor in Jackson since 17 years (I moved there not knowing about it) so I like to think that anybody from that group would think twice about it. John Kovacz ? you can Google him. Though, have not seen him in a long time so he may be up state for all I know. The question I ask myself is: why would someone have a large commercial exhaust with grease trap ? as you see it above diners etc., on his outside storage space which is a couple of 20 and 40? containers cobbled together? It is in relative plain view for everybody, police included, but I have never seen a raid there. Something must be cooking there. They are quiet neighbors other then the occasional ?loud pipes save lives? noise. They do have their annual meeting on the property on Labor Day weekend with a ton of people and bikes of course running in and out all the time day and night. A small canopy outside on the road at the drive way which is manned by 2 or 3 people all the time who take turns. His property is L-shaped around mine and all the activity with campfire, campers which they bring in via truck and Porta-Potties is in the back. Needless to say that it is difficult to fall asleep those days. Sometimes I am thinking of joining them that weekend but have not done it yet. I am sure they would offer me a beer when I get there; only have to hop across the fence in the back J Even though the Jackson police know about the address etc., I have never seen a squad car going by at that time. I was told by others who know the inside of the Pagans better than I do, that I can leave my house open at any time and cars open in the drive way without fear of break ins. And there seems to be some truth to it because the 10 or so houses around his property never had a problem as long as I live there whereas people the next street over had cars vandalized, broken into and house robberies over the years. If that is true then it is worth putting up with some noise once or twice a year. Buying motorcycles themselves isn?t any kind of problem. It?s the money we spend on them ? after they are bought ? that really seems to add up. It?s a direct result of the lies we motorcyclists tell ourselves. ?This bike is (almost) perfect?.? Remember the old saw about how the last 10 percent of the work takes 90 percent of the time? I think that this is the ?moto-farkel corollary?. A bike that is nearly perfect will only take 90% of the motorcycle?s purchase price to become completely perfect. Of course, it?s a lot easier to be philosophical about it after the bike IS perfect. ? https://rollingphysicsproblem.wordpress.com/2021/06/18/tweeks/ g. *** greg shamieh boof # 93 k-whiner # 83 jefferson, maryland shamiehg at comcast.net *** RPP - http://tiny.cc/rphyz 2017 F800 GSA -- ?FTB? *** 2000 K1200LT -- "darkside" 75R90S -- "esssss" *** 73R75/5 -- "mojo" ---------- Article Copyright (c) IBMWR and the author(s). I have some GP X-Files. (thanks to some of you that helped with maps and files)I also used my ?scenic ? app in addition. (Btw If anybody?s interested in tagging along that would be fine with me, the more the merrier. ) I want to make sure that me & my motorcycle is prepared for the journey. Looking for some advice as far as maintenance for my 2004 1150RT. Bought the bike with 18 K about 2 1/2 years ago. Cross country did a full maintenance and some needed work out about 20 k. Other than that some of the things below have already been taken care of. I still feel that I would like I have the bike looked at as well as serviced and or replace any needed belts -parts -fluids , etc. Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated. I guess I could go back to cross country but I need to have some money left over for the trip - ? There are things I'd suggest checking: - Rear drive. When was the oii last changed?? Has the driveshaft spline to the rear-drive been lubricated? - Alternator belt. It dies with age and use. I usually plan on every 40,000 miles, but the newer bikes use a stretch belt that's a bit more forgiving. You have a fixed length belt and it might be time to change it before subjecting it to miles and heat. - Transmission oil.? I don't know what's called for on the R1150 series bikes, but you may want to check that. - Brake fluid and flushing of the brakes. I don't recall exactly what year bikes have the "whizzy" brakes, but I think most of the 1150's do. That requires a different sort of flush/bleed procedure, that many home mechanics get wrong. There are two circuits for each wheel - and it takes some knowledge to do them right.? The fluid is called for every 24 months from the date the bike was manufactured.? I'd stick to that schedule since repairing that system can be quite costly, and failure isn't something you want. And if these have been done by CC as part of a major service - then you can forgeddaboutit.. All of the above could be done by Mike Kowal (MG Cycles - Howell - a club member - 732-239-8541).?? You probably want to contact him now if you're considering scheduling it with him. It's his busy season.
