I've been through it 3 times in the past 10 years... always something new.? Dale would spend time with anyone walking around and asking questions. https://wheelsthroughtime.com/ Roger T Dale's Wheels Through Time???It is with heavy hearts that we at Wheels Through Time let you know that our beloved founder, curator, and friend Dale Walksler passed away peacefully, with his wife by his side, at home on February 3, 2021, after a courageous four year battle with cancer. In 1967 at the age of 15, Dale built his first motorcycle, sparking a life-long love affair with American Motorcycles and their history. At 22, Dale established a Harley/Davidson Franchise in Mt. Vernon, Ill: Dale?s Harley-Davidson. His signal success as a dealer grew to include the decades-long work that would define his life: the creation of the museum we now know as Wheels Through Time.As the museum collection grew, so too did Dale?s vision for the museum, his reputation, his mechanical and curatorial skills, and a goal of always exceeding expectations of customers and guests. In 2002 Dale opened the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, NC. From humble beginnings in a small Illinois town, one of the world?s premier collections of rare and vintage American motorcycles, automobiles, and memorabilia emerged. Wheels Through Time became an Iconic American Institution and known internationally. Those who have visited Wheels Through Time know that Dale?s passion was not just something to be observed but rather experienced. Whether it was listening to his vast knowledge and stories of transportation history or watching him start a motorcycle, his was a passion that was infectious. It inspired in many, that same desire to preserve and celebrate American motorcycle history. His genius rested on the latter portion of the Wheels Through Time logo, ?The Museum That Runs.? Dale was a man of vision, zeal, intensity, imagination, and generosity. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the staff at Wheels Through Time, and as well as by the countless tens of thousands who have visited the museum. Dale?s vision was not just one of preserving the past but was also focused on the future. In that regard, he made great strides to ensure that the museum and his legacy would carry on for generations to come.A celebration of Dale?s life will be announced at a later date. At this time, we ask for privacy for the family as they mourn his passing. At Dale?s request, in lieu of flowers, please send any donations and condolences to Wheels Through Time, PO Box 790, Maggie Valley, NC 28751. All donations will be dedicated to ensuring the continuance of the legacy that Dale created far into the future and to giving museum visitors historical insight into the vital role that transportation has played in American history. The thrill of hearing the cycles run coupled with thoughts of riding into the wind will continue to evoke thoughts of Dale?s vibrant spirit --- and his dream. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... John didn't believe in cars, and didn't own one. John came to the club after answering an ad I'd run in the Internet BMW Riders marketplace looking for a seat pan for an early K-bike.? He'd recently inherited a K75 from his uncle, and it came with some spare parts.? He insisted on bringing it down to me - and he showed up late one night with it, refusing anything in return. He ended up joining the club after our meeting, and told people he finally found a group of people with the same passion for riding that he had. John and I remained close friends until his untimely death - I'd talked with him about 2 days before on some GPS things we were looking at.? He was on his way to our 3-Club-Rumble when he had the accident that killed him. As far as John's writing - he wrote a number of articles that premiered in our newsletter, later to be shared on the Internet, and one or two eventually in this book. A few of his best stories (IMHO) only appeared in the club newsletter, one in particular about a Super-Bowl weekend, spending time transporting bets in the parking lot of the stadium (if I remember right in Texas) to some bookies from people attending the game. When we have finally a person to person meeting, I have a copy of the book I'd be happy to loan out (provided it is returned...) but I'd suggest that the book is well worth the small money that Aerostich is asking for it, and I'd encourage you to buy it. John and I shared the birthday of June 24th - and it became a tradition to get together on our birthdays, leading to somewhat epic rides he did just to get to dinner. If left unrepaired, a potential safety defect could lead to injury or even death. Safety defects must be repaired by a dealer at no cost to you. Why am I getting this email? You are receiving this message because you requested to be notified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) if there is a safety recall that *may* affect your vehicle. The following *may apply* to one or more of your vehicles *if your vehicle is listed below*. Click on the NHTSA Recall ID Number below to read more about the safety issue and the reason for the recall. To find out if your specific passenger vehicle is included in the recall, use our VIN Look-up Tool . When a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that a vehicle creates an unreasonable risk to safety or fails to meet minimum safety standards, the manufacturer is required to fix that vehicle at no cost to the owner. That can be done by repairing it, replacing it, offering a refund (for equipment) or, in rare cases, repurchasing the car. What should I do if my vehicle is included in this recall? If your vehicle is included in this recall,*it is very important that you get it fixed as soon as possible given the potential danger to you and your passengers if it is not addressed*. You should receive a separate letter in the mail from the vehicle manufacturer, notifying you of the recall and explaining when the remedy will be available, whom to contact to repair your vehicle, and to remind you that the repair will be done at no charge to you. If you believe your vehicle is included in the recall, but you do not receive a letter in the mail from the vehicle manufacturer, please call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or contact your vehicle manufacturer or dealership. Thanks to the Skylands club for forwarding the info. Roger T -----Original Message----- From: David Cushing via groups.io To: skylandsbmwriders at groups.io Sent: Fri, Feb 26, 2021 9:35 am Subject: [skylandsbmwriders] Spring(?) riding thoughts With all the snow/ice you recently got, I thought this would be a good reminder for anyone contemplating a ride in the warmer weather.? David ?? If you ride in an area of the USA that uses, sodium, (SALT) mixed with gravel, sand on paved streets and roads to de-ice during winter, and early spring. The gravel will lay around in some areas on the streets, roads.Acting like a lubricant under our Motorcycle tires, when accelerating, braking, or taking corners, and curves. There are maintenance crews who brush the stuff off the pavements, others don't. Taking some heavy good rains to wash it off. ? If possible, try to 'read' the road. Local city streets, highways over winter, ice or snow covered, thawing in the daytime. Water running into repaired pot holes, then with subzero temps, have re-opened last year's existing pot holes. ?Let me add: DON'T follow cars closely. Giant potholes appear suddenly and crush wheels. Ride in the part of the lane where you can see the road surface clearly for a LONG ways ahead. Keep your eyes up and scan for potholes, gravel, black ice, meltwater runoff, etc. ?Check and adjust your tire pressures DAILY before you ride. park the bike outdoors for a half hour then check the tires, because the cold will drop pressure enough to result in accelerated, uneven tire wear and low traction. ?Tom CutterYardley, PAwww.RubberChickenRacingGarage.com ?Like many of us (I suspect) I whiled away quite a few hours this past year watching moto-related videos on YouTube.? Among the best I encountered were the riding skills series done by Bret Tkacs, both on the Mototrek channel and under his own brand.? Largely dual-sport oriented but with plenty of solid advice relevant to street riding as well. ?He talks a lot about 'vision', in terms of keeping your eyes focused on the furthest point down the road that can provide useful information.? You can (and should) scan the road surface immediately ahead of you and check your periphery, but you should always return to the limits of your vision as a point of reference.? That's going to give you the earliest indication of a change in the riding surface or a potential hazard, and the most time to react.? If you spot that pothole 50 yards out it's a lot easier to adjust your line and/or slow down than if you are fixated on the pavement 20 feet in front of you.? It sounds obvious, but it is amazing how easy it is to slide into a sort of myopic focus on what is immediately in front of us. ?I started to practice this deliberately last Fall when riding forest roads on the GS, forcing myself to keep my eyes as far down road as possible rather than trying to spot every bump and rut as it approached the front tire.? It sounds easier than it is, but pretty quickly I found that my riding became smoother (and faster), changes in road surface were easier to manage, and I was making fewer last-minute adjustments.? Kind of like getting comfortable with standing on the pegs, it was a learned behavior that has changed my riding style completely. ?This is all to say that TC is absolutely right.? This time of year more than any other, give yourself that cushion that allows the longest line of sight you can muster and pick the line that maximizes it.? Proactive beats reactive every time. ?Stay safe out there, ? ? -- David Cushing _._,_._,_ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
