According to Mr. Notte, of Cross Country(Edison), the reason they gave up on the old stuff is the techs aren’t familiar with the techniques necessary to keep after the older stuff. I have a nice selection of ’73 and older machines, none of which they will touch. It’s an ongoing conversation, and I mention it each time I see him. I have even offered to source techs for him, and manage, for free, a vintage repair department. They certainly have the space. But, all to no avail. Otherwise, they are great folks, and still good for tires and helmets, etc.

For my 2 cents, I think for the R90s, with what you describe, you’re best served taking it to either Max, or Bob’s, as they will have more than one guy to look it over, so you’ll benefit from the collaborative effort, and, they’ll have a better established supply chain for the parts required for your job, thus reducing delay in completion.

The one-man, works-in-the-home garage shops are fine enough for perhaps a wheel rebuild, or a major service, but once you get deep into the machine, and beyond the one-man-shops abilities, and things start getting sublet, there is a greater probability of delay owing to backlog, shipping errors, etc.

Cross Country has worked on my 78 R100S for the last 15 years when needed. Always did a great job. However it was mentioned to me last year that they were going to stop working on older bikes. Don’t know the reason and haven’t needed them since so I’m not sure what would happen if I wanted them to work on the bike again now.

So I’ve been taking my 95 R1100GS to Cross Country BMW in Hasbrouck Heights
on 17.  It’s a newer bike than yours to be sure but they have done good
work.  It’s a new shop.  Nice place.
