I'm a lifetime time BMW rider, who regrets selling my last airhead. 
Thought that at age 75, maybe it was time to put away my helmet. WRONG!

If you have any leads on a R75/5 especially LWB, I would love to hear 
about it. An R60/5 might work, too.?I'm in Philly so maybe one of the 
local members has a bike they would like to send to a good home.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi All

I have a 1975 R90S with 50k miles on it and it is using too much oil. I tried 2 different BMW friendly businesses to get the heads and cylinders looked at to see what was the problem and what the work would cost to fix it. Both places say, send me the heads and cylinders and we will look at them, with no time commitments. I spent 3 months at the 1st place and no one even looked at them. They have been in the 2nd place for 3 weeks with no idea of when they can be looked at.

Is this normal trying to get machine work done? Is there any recommendations anyone can give me to have my this type of work done?

I don't want to make a recommendation of a place and find out you've

Thanks for the quick response.



The parts spent 3 months at Rubber Chicken Racing Garage where no one looked at them. They have been in Hermy?s for 3 weeks but they have no one to look at them and had them sent to a machine shop they use but no indication when they will be looked at. Just that it could take weeks or months.



It sure is a strange way to do business.

So I?ve been taking my 95 R1100GS to Cross Country BMW in Hasbrouck Heights
on 17.  It?s a newer bike than yours to be sure but they have done good
work.  It?s a new shop.  Nice place.

Hasbrouck is strictly BMW Motorrad.  So, they should.  The one in Edison
(Metuchen?) is Triumph/Ducati I think. Give them a call - 201 288-0900.

There's also always MAX BMW.  They'll pick it up.
  They did nice work on my 93 R100R a few years ago.

Since you're in emerson, I had my heads done at olson engines in w.nyack a few years ago and they've been good he does old engines, if he can't get a part he will make it, I'm here in westwood

Cross Country has worked on my 78 R100S for the last 15 years when needed. Always did a great job. However it was mentioned to me last year that they were going to stop working on older bikes. Don?t know the reason and haven?t needed them since so I?m not sure what would happen if I wanted them to work on the bike again now.

So I?ve been taking my 95 R1100GS to Cross Country BMW in Hasbrouck Heights
on 17.  It?s a newer bike than yours to be sure but they have done good
work.  It?s a new shop.  Nice place.

According to Mr. Notte, of Cross Country(Edison), the reason they gave up on the old stuff is the techs aren?t familiar with the techniques necessary to keep after the older stuff. I have a nice selection of ?73 and older machines, none of which they will touch. It?s an ongoing conversation, and I mention it each time I see him. I have even offered to source techs for him, and manage, for free, a vintage repair department. They certainly have the space. But, all to no avail. Otherwise, they are great folks, and still good for tires and helmets, etc. 

For my 2 cents, I think for the R90s, with what you describe, you?re best served taking it to either Max, or Bob?s, as they will have more than one guy to look it over, so you?ll benefit from the collaborative effort, and, they?ll have a better established supply chain for the parts required for your job, thus reducing delay in completion. 

The one-man, works-in-the-home garage shops are fine enough for perhaps a wheel rebuild, or a major service, but once you get deep into the machine, and beyond the one-man-shops abilities, and things start getting sublet, there is a greater probability of delay owing to backlog, shipping errors, etc.

Don?t know the reason and haven?t needed them since so I?m not sure what would happen if I wanted them to work on the bike again now.

It really all comes down to who is swinging the wrench.  Twenty years ago Cross Country in Bound Brook had no one who ?knew? our machines and they caused me some real grief with my R100RT wheel bearings.  I ended up just using them just for parts. 

I don?t know if the people now running Cross Country in Bergen County are the same people but my guess is that if they are stopping work on our bikes, then their graybeard wrench is retiring and taking his ?special? tools with him!!  I ended up using Amols in Dumont but they aren?t in the Airhead business any more.

Consider contacting Mike Kowal down in Howell Township  732 239 8541 / 732 886 6445  Mike works out of his garage on his property, certainly knows our bikes very well as well as the previous generations of classics. I have no idea who does his head machining.

The one-man, works-in-the-home garage shops are fine enough for perhaps a wheel rebuild, or a major service, but once you get deep into the machine, and beyond the one-man-shops abilities, and things start getting sublet, there is a greater probability of delay owing to backlog, shipping errors, etc. 

Careful with the one-man shops. Received my freshly painted R75/6 with a small dent in the tank that definitely wasn't there before drop off. Hard to argue with the service departments manager's supervisor in this situation. Riding around with an airhead sticker on the tank to cover it up. I kinda like it now.?

According to Mr. Notte, of Cross Country(Edison), the reason they gave up on the old stuff is the techs aren?t familiar with the techniques necessary to keep after the older stuff. I have a nice selection of ?73 and older machines, none of which they will touch. It?s an ongoing conversation, and I mention it each time I see him. I have even offered to source techs for him, and manage, for free, a vintage repair department. They certainly have the space. But, all to no avail. Otherwise, they are great folks, and still good for tires and helmets, etc. 

For my 2 cents, I think for the R90s, with what you describe, you?re best served taking it to either Max, or Bob?s, as they will have more than one guy to look it over, so you?ll benefit from the collaborative effort, and, they?ll have a better established supply chain for the parts required for your job, thus reducing delay in completion.

Cross Country has worked on my 78 R100S for the last 15 years when needed. Always did a great job. However it was mentioned to me last year that they were going to stop working on older bikes. Don?t know the reason and haven?t needed them since so I?m not sure what would happen if I wanted them to work on the bike again now.
