Reminder - this is a 1982 R100RS, in rebuild status, i'm into rear of the engine, hoping to replace seals. Please note that the crank is blocked in the front with a bolt and the cover is threaded on. I marked the clutch pack assembly with paint, for alignment of all of the rotating parts upon rebuild. I removed the 6 clutch carrier bolts and nothing happened, everything was stuck together, firm. I carefully wedged screw drivers in to try to pry the carrier from the rest, or the spring, or to start any movement, no dice. I resorted to PB Blaster and a heat gun, and the screwdrivers and that got things loose, somewhat. The alignment pins were really fused well. But, I got it apart and everything off and out of the case. Next time, lube those pins! Now, the rear main seal must have been leaking bad because the inside of the case is a terrible mess of char and goo. I sprayed it with engine and carb cleaner and I will wipe it all down- that all looks salvageable. The clutch friction disc is what is bad, its scarred, black and impregnated with oil. Its a goner. In looking at the parts suppliers, I am getting the recommendation to replace all of the assembly as a whole, which is $$. 41k on the motor, friction disc is 5mm in total thickness. Do I need some parts, or all of them? thanks p From vinceotter49 at gmail.com Wed Feb 17 11:21:51 2021 From: vinceotter49 at gmail.com (Jim Wilson) Date: Wed, 17 Feb 2021 08:21:51 -0800 Subject: clutch woes In-Reply-To: <7A8241B8-9F31-490C-90B9-AA2815B85E39@me.com> References: <7A8241B8-9F31-490C-90B9-AA2815B85E39@me.com> Message-ID: 2 words http://www.southlandclutch.com besure to index punch mark your whole assy [a tab] b4 taking it apart > > Now, the rear main seal must have been leaking bad because the inside of > the case is a terrible mess of char and goo. > The clutch friction disc is what is bad, its scarred, black and > impregnated with oil. As a general practice, I replace only what is needed and evaluate other parts along the way. You definitely need flywheel bolts and a clutch friction disc. That's what I replaced on my /5 project bike and I got the disc from Boxer2Valve ($112 including shipping). All my other parts looked serviceable. No right answers here, so I?ll just say what my plan is at this point. Please do not hate on my choice. I am going to swap out all of the parts as a set. Im not sending the clutch out to Southland. The way in which the plate carrier was fused to the pins and the condition of the friction plate cause me to just wish for new components that are new. Because nothing would budge, I pried a flat screwdriver between the diaphragm spring and the friction plate, to lever off the carrier plate. I visibly saw the carrier plate bending, warping itself on the stuck pins as I levered it off. I know that the friction plate is in need of replacement, but, if the intent is that the rest of these components to be flat, well, I know that they are not. A new spring is smart as well. So, while I could sand off and clean the rest of the parts, it is worth the peace of mind (to me) to know that I will have quality components that will last. thanks! My bike has the same clutch and flywheel configuration as the /7 and older bike, so the spring was a direct fit. Of course my bike has some odd bits on it that I think did not align with models produced for the US. My bike was sold in Wesidbaden for use in Europe. It came with a factory kickstarter, headlight switch, KM per hour and KM only odometer. Also came with the older style air filter and aluminum side covers. Bean can points ignition too which was standard for 79-80 bikes. That?s part of why I like the bike so much.
