From marylandairheads at gmail.com Tue Mar 5 13:00:38 2019 From: marylandairheads at gmail.com (Maryland Airheads) Date: Tue, 5 Mar 2019 13:00:38 -0500 Subject: [MDairheads] Mark Lipschitz Message-ID: Fellow Airheads, It is with great sadness that I share news of the passing of Mark Lipschitz. Mark died while motorcycling in South Africa some time within the last two days. I do not have many details yet, but do know that he was riding with fellow airheads and another friend on one the annual trips he has taken the past several years. At the risk of being to brief, I do not think speculation of what happened at this time makes any sense, not that any of it makes any sense to me right now. I loved Mark as many of you do. He was a tremendous individual. His dedication to the people he loved and cared about, and his capacity for giving and sharing his life with others was rare and beautiful. He lived his life with vigor. His ability to touch the lives of many and bring them together in celebration of the common things we all love was one of his greatest attributes. I already miss him terribly. When more information becomes available I will work to make certain it is shared with everyone here Will Andalora Maryland Airmarshal ABC 11737 410.596.0812 www.airheads.org Maryland Airheads Online Calendar: *https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=marylandairheads%40gmail.com&ctz=America/New_York * Google Photos Links to Maryland Airhead Events 2018 Last Days of Summer https://photos.app.goo.gl/fC2sHqgctx1MV9gw5 2018 Summer Solstice Tech Weekend https://photos.app.goo.gl/YhLFV2AUHr2A6vWR7 2018 TecnhoBarn https://photos.app.goo.gl/mwbNEFZBDM2sAetJ3 2018 Supertech 2.3 https://photos.app.goo.gl/PLn3L34iSenMLnMR2 2018 Supertech 2.3 Museum Tour Day https://photos.app.goo.gl/2cJl3ylJbNaUVG2A3 2017 Last Days of Summer https://photos.app.goo.gl/JEVvywZREED7OptL2 2017 Golden Age of Airheads https://goo.gl/photos/nQkpXFtvxHmwLDek8 2017 Summer Solstice Tech Day https://goo.gl/photos/qN2YsweKParKqvXQ8 2017 Rolling Rally *https://goo.gl/photos/KJT2wXuH6eTM19wU6 * 2017 TechnoBarn https://goo.gl/photos/j1f8tByCfVaBnCUKA 2017 SuperTech 2.2 https://goo.gl/photos/XrckZWXUDRdgJGjk6 2016 Last Days of Summer https://goo.gl/photos/nYfKa6TabUay714h9 2016 Tom's Tech Day https://goo.gl/photos/dmh5pktuHvUuvAwH9 2016 Passing of the Airmarshal Flag https://goo.gl/photos/u429MPzKALcJeuF79 2016 Summer Solstice Tech Day https://goo.gl/photos/SkV19aC4Qc6vJTL78 2016 Rolling Rally https://goo.gl/photos/ZuNcyMc2DMcrghXP6 2016 SuperTech 2.1 https://goo.gl/photos/Tdg86q3VsR87FdCF8 2015 Last Days of Summer https://goo.gl/photos/w1XEMp9EkamucpK19 2015 Rolling Rally https://goo.gl/photos/GKYhLDgV4VC4jUcZ9 2015 SuperTech 2.0 https://goo.gl/photos/oq99m9x492qFFbGR6 2014 Last Days of Summer https://goo.gl/photos/WSmGi4YhUrHjY8Xt7 Note: If you are a Gmail user, you can permanently add these albums to your Google Photo Account. Didn't have to do any of that. I looked forward to seeing him at the British European bike day when he could make it, in fact I am finishing a R100S I wanted to show him this time around. I loved riding with Mark. But more than that, I loved sitting around after a good ride, sharing stories of our travels and trading political barbs. We often found ourselves barely missing each other in Dubai or South Africa or some random corner of the world. He certainly inspired me to explore South Africa on a GS when I was there a couple of years ago. Katie truly loved him as well. He will certainly be missed by both of us. Thank you for letting us know, Will. One never looks forward to sharing this sort of news, but we appreciate your communicating this for us. brian m. kirchhoff 402.617.2222 mobile On Tue, Mar 5, 2019 at 1:45 PM Zwicky, Eric via MDAirheads < mdairheads at casano.com> wrote: > Sad and distressing. I seem to remember him wearing a pair of pajama bottoms that declared it would be a festive night of eating and drinking. And it was! Rolling off the mountain the following morning, my focus drifted away from the road and I found myself going over the rim of the pavement and into a ditch. That's when my 79 R100S lost it's faring. I was pretty rattled. I was scared, my adrenaline was pumping, I wanted to pick up my bike and pretty unclear about the whole situation. As I got to my feet, the first thing I remember was Mark bracing me by my shoulders and calmly telling me to relax and assessing if I was injured. Mark died while motorcycling in South Africa some time within the last two days.? I do not have many details yet, but do know that he was riding with fellow airheads and another friend on one the annual trips he has taken the past several years. At the risk of being to brief, I do not think speculation of what happened at this time makes any sense, not that any of it makes any sense to me right now. I loved Mark as many of you do.? He was a tremendous individual. His dedication to the people he loved and cared about, and his capacity for giving and sharing his life with others was rare and beautiful. He lived his life with vigor. His ability to touch the lives of many and bring them together in celebration of the common things we all love was one of his greatest attributes. I already miss him terribly. I made a stop to see Scott Brady, the owner, editor of "Overland Journal", in Prescott, AZ, from which there is another tale that is now unfolding, but that is a story for later. See https://overlandjournal.com/ I spent the night in Kingman, AZ, where it rained all night. I climbed on my bike the next day, went out on the highway in the rain and the bike started to run on only one cylinder, so I returned to the hotel overhang, out of the rain and attempted to fix the bike. There is a long back story about how this turned out and I met some great folks who helped me, but I could not get the necessary parts and ultimately got myself towed back to Phoenix and the bike taken "toward" Tonto Basin, where it was to be fixed by Dave Alquist of Quality Cycle Service. (Failed coil.) A good Samaritan and fellow BMW "airhead" owner helped me with this towing. Much thanks Jim Marsh! BUT, there's a catch: one cannot get to Tonto Basin UNLESS the river is flowing below a certain cubic feet per second, because one MUST cross this river to get to Tonto Basin. The school kids cross the flooded river to get to school using a massive ex-Army 6 by 6 truck. In the summer the river often has NO flow! SO my bike was stored in a storage unit across from Tonto Basin until the flow lowered sufficiently for Dave to come get it; that happened several weeks ago and the bike has now been fixed for a few weeks. BUT in the meantime, it snowed and rained, and the river flow rate came back up and my bike was cut off from the world, and me! I was contemplating "no bike for the trip to Mexico!". I fly back to Phoenix on Mar 12 to hopefully pick up my bike and ride into Mexico with the NorCal BMW Club, AND thankfully, it seems like the river flow rate is coming down. Click on the link below and scroll down to see the chart showing "Discharge, cubic feet per second", where it now shows the flow rate becoming low enough. Pretty cool, but not when your bike is held hostage! Hopefully Dave will now be able to use his big-tired, raised-up Jeep and trailer, to ford the river with my bike and take it back to Phoenix where I will pick it up. Dave has been very helpful! Thus the subject of this email being "Wacky Story Time". This kind of stuff will keep you up at night; hey, a motorcycle trip is in peril! >From Dave Alquist a week ago, the awesome technician for my bike, who is located in Tonto Basin, AZ: I think maybe the Tonto Creek will subside enough for me to trailer the bike across by the 11th, I'll keep you posted on the stream flow. If you'd like, I've attached the website for "Gage Station For Tonto Creek Above Gun Creek" from the USGS, look for the "discharge, cubic feet per second" graph. I can safely cross below 700cfs. It's at 2600 cfs right now, down from 3500 last night. That's like 3500 people dumping buckets of water into the creek every second! It's all about the snowmelt in the high country north of us. I did want to mention that Mark was riding with Jeff Rhodes and Jim Dalton as well as another friend on this trip. Jeff and Jim are still in South Africa. Claudia, Ashani, and Dena are South Africa now. We will likely know more when people return. Beyond Mark's family, this has been very hard on those who were traveling with him. Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers (if you are so inclined). We are not certain what, where, or when, but we have been discussing organizing some type of a gathering to honor Mark. Many people have been posting photos and sharing stories or thoughts on how Mark impacted their lives. We have created a shared photos folder where people can share images and offer comments. If anyone wants to share a story or remembrance we will work to make certain it is available for everyone to see. We are not sure what that will be yet. One that has been in the works for many months. She alone secured a flight travel itinerary for a trip to Thailand. March 30 thru April 23. Ashani and Dina are each attending their Spring college semester. Any sort of full scale celebration for Mark?s magnificent life will need to take place at a time when his three favorite ladies are available. As one might sumise from their schedule, it could be a while. We will know a lot more once they return from Africa and we can put some serious consideration to specific calendar dates. For the moment, I have a very tentitive hotel location in mind. There is a Marriott situated within angry wrench tossing distance of BWI. Of the many hotels located near the airport, it seems to have the largest of meeting room capacity. First, a date must be established. Second, an approximate headcount must be procured. Third, for cost reasons, the appropriate sized meeting hall must then be reserved. Our culinary offering could be done in the spirit of SuperTech. Pizza, hors d?oeuvre's and ice chests full of beer. A projector, screen and a podium would round it all out. Whether or not the hotel would permit our rolling an R100RS into the rented hall remains in question. With gasoline evacuated from fuel tank and float bowls, I see no reason why not. If we don?t ask, they can?t say no ! Yes, no, maybe ? What causes old rubber brake fluid hoses to stop allowing fluid to return to the master cylinder reservoir upon releasing the brake lever ? With the caliper and the master cylinder fully reconditioned, and new fluid pumped in, the brake pads only partially retract . A small parentage of drag or squeeze remains. The wheel refuses to spin freely. When the old hoses are tossed in the trash and new hoses are installed, compliance is restored. I don?t get it. With 120psi blasted through the old hose, no obstruction is witnessed. When the rubber hose is razor knifed into short sections, no crimp, kink or obstruction is obvious. The ID appears consistent. The old hose acts like a one-way check-valve. Pressure is squeezed in, but fails to escape. Any ideas. Bill. So, assuming these are Brembo calipers, not earlier ATE brakes... When you mention that the calipers were fully reconditioned, did that include splitting the halves, removing the black square nylon piston ring and carefully inspecting the square groove it retracts into (a dental mirror with a flexible head was the best inspection tool that I?ve found)? If not, it would be worth doing IMO. The memory of that black nylon ring returning to its seat is what causes the piston halves to retreat upon release of the lever on a Brembo caliper. I?ve found many of tiny aluminum oxidation pimples in that groove to prevent the ring from fully seating as you describe. That groove, while tough to get to, should be surgically clean and completely free of aluminum acne if-you-will. Be very careful not to score the walls of the cylinder that the pistons glide across. Its the groove that deforms, preventing the ring from easily retreating to its fully seated position. As for the rubber hoses, they rot and swell from the inside as they age. It could also be that the swelling affects (absorbs) some of that memory too. Squeezing the brake is a forcing action so I would expect higher pressure than return. Any air leaks or other disruption in the hydraulic system when the lever is released will affect the gentle retreating of the caliper pistons and cause what you describe. If it is an air leak, they would eventually return the pistons to their seat and release the grip on the disc. If no air leaks and no nylon ring/groove obstruction?its likely the pins and/or the tired hoses. Replacing the pins that the brake pads ride on is also worth doing and cheap. Despite looking ok, the pads can hang up on those old pins and even slight friction can disrupt the returning action. These are often over looked. Over aggressive cleaning up the pistons can also remove the Teflon-like coating and affect the smooth movement of the return path of that the nylon ring re-seating. Lastly, when splitting that caliper there is a tiny o-ring where fluid passing between the halves. That should be replaced too with one from the correct compound (I can?t recall it right now, otherwise that could also compromise the closed hydraulic loop and allow air in spoiling that retreating process of that black, square piston ring. My $0.02 cents and ramble. ?Tony B. On Mar 26, 2019, at 20:40, Bill Lambert via MDAirheads wrote: Gentleman, Ladies, In recent efforts to sort out nagging brake issues, I have a question. It doesn't seem to be a function of the brake hose to regulate how much fluid is returned to the MC. And you rebuilt the MC so there shouldn't have been any obstruction to the return hole. After all the previous work it seems that new hoses were just the thing needed. Maybe your bike was just trying to tell you something? Were these OEM type hoses? I have heard the rubber in them collapses internally and shows little outward effects. That could be the explanation you are looking for. The more popular metal clad hoses today fail somewhat differently as I recall but I don't remember now exactly how that was.
