Chris I want to first thank you for thanking Dale and Carol on behalf of the troops sparing me at least from further embarrassing them by reiterating what wonderful and tolerant hosts they have both been (particularly Carol) these last years.  I?d be running out of type.

I would also like to thank the ?New Guy?, who will likely never see this, for bringing such an interesting problem with his R65 to engage our minds for so many hours.  I?m always amazed at the trust the uninitiated put in us as we spin wrenches steadily disassembling their new to them problem bike.

And John Eckenrode, what can I say?  After last years main seal debacle you naively returned allowing us to ?assist? you installing those emulators on your RS.  Thank goodness Chris Kennedy was there to direct operations.  And please note that Chris knew that at the first cocktail it was time to lay down the tools till the next morning.  A sign of maturity most in this group have yet to attain.  Myself included.  Not sure where we would be without Chris?s guidance.  Hope you made it home OK John....

Bill Lambert old man.  How wonderful it was that you brought Mark Lipchitz?s Ronald MacDonald bike to our gathering.  Certainly bittersweet for me and others I?m sure.  I look upon that bike with new eyes and see it for the piece of art it is.  (Jim are you reading this?) Funny how time changes ones perspective.  I remember Mark saying once as he rode up on the bike and removed his helmet, I don?t want to hear about it!? cutting off any comment about the color scheme.  

And a quick thank you to our new associate Russ from Florida, on his fourth TechDay in a month of constant traveling, for his assisting Peter Gruner in adding the necessary wiring for rear light functions on Mark?s bike so no one gets arrested test riding the bike.

And a big thank you to myself for patiently draining Mark?s tank of the nasty degraded gasoline while the rest of you enjoyed a second cocktail.

The DC BMW Group.  Always look forward to seeing you guys too.  Steve and Dale it?s refreshing to know that after all these years you still trust Dale with regards to your motorcycles.  (If little else) It gives his newer Maryland friends confidence that eventually Dale might,  well, maybe, answer our newby questions.

You PA guys.  What am I saying, Guys, plural, Craig Barnhart alone, without fail, always steps up to to represent the PA crowd.  Craig is such an upstanding individual covering for the rest of you.  We are always glad to see him.  This year he brought his wife with him which is braver than the rest of us have managed.  

To our Air Marshall Will Andalora, never has there been such an inspirational wrench!  No matter how dire the technical difficulty appears to mere mortals Will is always there to see the problem to the end.  Even when most of the rest of the wrenches are slumped at the picnic table having far exceeded the kings ration of booze.  Not that our Air Marshal wasn?t keeping up, he is just so much more, hmmm, persistent than the rest of us.  To the benefit of us all! 

Alex Balmaceda.  An excellent wrench himself.  Showing up on Sunday morning of a three day event.  All the coffee was gone by then!  Always great to see you even if only for a few minutes.  Glad we could entertain your riding companions with a SlicedCycle demo run. 

Always great to see everyone. And Dale, good luck with the turtles.  I?d be interested to know how the soup turns out.

If I missed thanking anyone, my apologies. Probably time for my first cocktail as my memory seems to be fading out.

  Yes indeed Chris, we agree.  Dale and Carol have once again provided us with another terrific weekend.  Every Airheads gathering should be so good.  This was one of several protracted mechanical challenges. Many people spent a whole bunch of combined hours focusing on a wide variety of problems in search of a solution.  Some were won, others, not so much.  Good fun.

Dale, 

Big, big thanks for hosting another outstanding gathering. Great group, great conversations. Sorry for those of you who went to bed early. Will graced us with his bovine adventures late Saturday night to the point it became difficult to breathe! 

Bill, outstanding duty!  It was also fun to meet new friends too.

A special thanks to Dale for sharing his very deep knowledge on pre-1970 bikes.

Dale and all the guys,

I wanted to thank you again for inviting me to your fraternity. I don't think I've done so much male bonding since I last played competitive softball, which is longer ago than I care to think.

This was the first time I had ever attended such a gathering. I guess I previously thought of motorcycling and attending to one's motorcycle as a solitary experience. In my day, one bought one's parts from Capitol Cycle on Champlain Street NW (a bad neighborhood in those days) and found a good mechanic when one had to do something more complicated than changing fluids or seats or a tire.

I learned a lot by observing, especially how you guys handled the misfiring R65. The technology has changed from the /2s I favor, but basic principles remain. 

It was heartwarming to see a young guy interested in a accessible motorcycle that he could actually work on; it was even more rewarding to see you all selflessly try, in turns, to help him out. I had to leave before it was running smoothly but I assume you finally triumphed.

I'm looking forward to the next gathering, and hope to ride there. If not, Chris can drive and I'll sit in the sidecar.

A few of you asked me what kind of article I write. I'll send two in a separate email that you can delete if not interested.

 I was only able to stop by for a few hours on Saturday morning, but I very much enjoyed meeting everyone, talking airheads, and watching some wrenching in earnest.? Watching Chris and John re-do the front end of the R100RS has inspired me to finally replace the springs in my R90S front forks.? Looks a whole lot simpler.? Just got the kit from Bob's and will give it a go in the next few weeks.
Thank you Dale (and Carol, whom I did not have a chance to meet) for the hospitality.? I hope to attend future tech days, and possibly the LDOS ride this fall.

Again, many thanks to Dale and Carol for their hospitality this past weekend.

I managed to arrive about five hours earlier than last year... and was greeted by many familiar faces. I came on four wheels instead of two this year and was eager to assist with other people's projects.  There were plenty to go around, and one in particular was very humbling.

Andre came from Manassas, Virginia with a new to him R65 that he could not get to run consistently. It was fitted with Mikuni 34mm round slide carburetors, a Motorrad Elektrik Alpha V.3 ignition system, and a BROWN Dyna coil.  We tried everything we could think of to get the bike to idle and run consistently... In the end we could not make the bike run as it should.  Andre, to his credit, left not dejected- but determined to contact Rocky Point Cycles for information on jetting and adjusting the carburetors. We also suggested swapping in a known good ignition system as a check against what was installed in his motorcycle.  With all the combined knowledge available (which should have been more than adequate), we simply could not make the bike run.

We spent time working on other motorcycles with measured success, but I was unsuccessful at replacing the speed sensor/odometer connection to the rear drive of my 93 Volvo 940. I will chalk that one up to mismatched components and the inability to get a positive connection between the sensor and wiring assembly.  That will have to wait for this coming weekend... We did manage to make Mark's bike come alive again with some carburetor adjustments and other modest interventions.

All in all, it was another fine weekend in Culpeper, VA. I was sad to have it end, and at the same time I am not sure I could have endured a third evening...

I am already looking forward to next year's event!

Hi Matt,

Glad you were able to join the gathering. The modification we were making to Johns R100RS was a combined spring and Race Tech Gold Emulators. This is a much more dramatic difference to just replacing the springs with Progressives or something similar. I wanted to thank you again for inviting me to your fraternity. I don't
think I've done so much male bonding since I last played competitive
softball, which is longer ago than I care to think.

This was the first time I had ever attended such a gathering. I guess I
previously thought of motorcycling and attending to one's motorcycle as a
solitary experience. In my day, one bought one's parts from Capitol Cycle on
Champlain Street NW (a bad neighborhood in those days) and found a good
mechanic when one had to do something more complicated than changing fluids
or seats or a tire.

I learned a lot by observing, especially how you guys handled the misfiring
R65. The technology has changed from the /2s I favor, but basic principles
remain. 

It was heartwarming to see a young guy interested in a accessible motorcycle
that he could actually work on; it was even more rewarding to see you all
selflessly try, in turns, to help him out. I had to leave before it was
running smoothly but I assume you finally triumphed.

I'm looking forward to the next gathering, and hope to ride there. If not,
Chris can drive and I'll sit in the sidecar.

A few of you asked me what kind of article I write. I'll send two in a
separate email that you can delete if not interested.

I?d be remiss in not chiming in to echo my thanks to our host and hostess, and the airheads near and far that made the annual pilgrimage to the Summer Solstice Tech Day. 

The camaraderie, wrenching, and cocktails afterwards at this annual event is the highlight of my ?airhead? year.

The best part this year was the opportunity to welcome at least 3 new ??heads? into the fold. I think Andr? (?New Guy?) was genuinely taken aback by the energy and enthusiasm we poured into a stranger?s bike, and also inviting him to a hearty lunch and during the search for his bike?s ?gremlin?.  

Several of us are anxious to see Max?s beautiful R60 in person, with Chris selflessly volunteering to serve as chauffeur!

I think we provided inspiration for Matt to update the suspension on his R90S, and now he knows some local ?heads that have been down that road. 

All in all, another great year!

This is a much more dramatic difference to just replacing the springs with Progressives or something similar.  I was only able to stop by for a few hours on Saturday morning, but I very much enjoyed meeting everyone, talking airheads, and watching some wrenching in earnest.? Watching Chris and John re-do the front end of the R100RS has inspired me to finally replace the springs in my R90S front forks.? Looks a whole lot simpler.? Just got the kit from Bob's and will give it a go in the next few weeks.

I look upon that bike with new eyes and see it for the piece of art it is.? (Jim are you reading this?) Funny how time changes ones perspective.? I remember Mark saying once as he rode up on the bike and removed his helmet, I don?t want to hear about it!? cutting off any comment about the color scheme.? 

And a quick thank you to our new associate Russ from Florida, on his fourth TechDay in a month of constant traveling, for his assisting Peter Gruner in adding the necessary wiring for rear light functions on Mark?s bike so no one gets arrested test riding the bike.

And a big thank you to myself for patiently draining Mark?s tank of the nasty degraded gasoline while the rest of you enjoyed a second cocktail.

Not that our Air Marshal wasn?t keeping up, he is just so much more, hmmm, persistent than the rest of us.? To the benefit of us all!

Thank you Dale and Carol for the great food, accommodations and wrenching
facilities.

This was my first Airhead event right after buying my first BMW (the R100)
two years ago. So I almost feel obligated to come every year. Actually
there's no obligation because I learn so much and have a great time talking
to everyone. It's such a great group. Yes, my wife likes you guys too.

It was fun to watch everyone help Andre and see his enthusiasm. He's going
to be a master in short amount of time I can tell. Hopefully the Hall
Sensor (or Ignition Control Module) will solve his issue.

I know I'm a bit late to respond but just couldn't top the other amazing airhead responses.  The event was fabulous and the hospitality of Dale and Carol was superb.  Thanks to John for syncing my carbs and others who helped.  John's new tool is great.   It was so good that Bill brought Mark's bike, it brought a part of Mark to the event and thanks to Jim and others who got it going.  And Chris K. was up to his elbows assisting and directing the emulator install and other items.  Most of all, thanks to all  who attended and allowed me to get my airhead camaraderie fix.  I needed it.

Hi all,

Im searching for a ignition trigger unit or "bean can" that I could buy or
(hopefully) borrow temporarily to troubleshoot an intermittent loss of
ignition issue that I have been dealing with for the better part of the
past year.  A spare hall sensor or the assembly (sensor mounted to plate)
would be just as useful.

I need the non-points type designed for 1981+ electronic ignition systems.
If you have one that you a looking to sell, or dont mind lending
temporarily, please let me know.  I would greatly appreciate it.

After already purchasing a new coil and module, these intermittent issues
really are a bummer to deal with!

After already purchasing a new coil and module, these intermittent issues

William (and Lewis),
That's a very valuable manual but it discusses only charging, not ignition.
I went thru the same thing swapping out parts and it turned out to be the
Hall Sensor, which I purchased from http://www.motoelekt.com
Rick Jones is a great guy to talk to about your issue too. I would just ask
if he has the part in stock. If it's not, you may wait for weeks.
I don't have a spare Hall Sensor for troubleshooting so maybe you want to
try finding one first. However if you already replaced the coils and
ignition module, I'd bet on the Hall Sensor.
