I was on my 1100S this weekend... I had a starter issue on Sunday afternoon in central PA - far from anything of note. Called Tom Cutter, he gave me sound advice! Left a message for Mark DelaneyM Got a tow start on Monday morning (the Oilhead does not like a push start!!!) Fortunately I had a spare key with me to open the gas tank, so ride home was in one shot! - a memorable ride! Mark Delaney had called me and told to come to his house...Just one hour of bullshitting and I had a used starter in place! THANKS again to Mark M So my further thoughts... Regardless of this internet age, we are reliant on the knowledge passed down to us through the 'experts' I simply cannot do it all on my bikes - I give thanks to Tom Cutter and Mark Delaney. I thought it might be useful to offer a class on "the Internet for Airheads", in which I would try to de-mystify some aspects of using the Internet. I am not kidding about this; most of you, if asked, will freely admit that you "can barely use email". The topics I thought I would cover: 1. how to use email a. proper use of To, Cc, Bcc, and Reply-To headers b. the subject line and maintaining a "thread" c. trimming your messages to only include relevant text from previous emails d. Identifying the source of an email, and understanding mailer errors e. interacting with mailing lists, like this one or the micapeak Airhead list f. dealing with "spam", "malware", "phishing", etc. 2. how to use your web browser a. The "name" of a web site and what is a "URL" b. Using the URL "bar" c. using Google to find things on the internet d. finding things you need on eBay and Amazon e. web security (passwords, https encryption) PA Airmarshal Rob Price wasn't overly enthused about this presentation, but we agreed that I would poll the nearby Airhead population for their opinions on the value of this talk. With the cooler weather I was reflecting how much I enjoyed the Last Days of Summer Rally and just how unpleasant the return journey was in the very heavy rain. There was however one bright spot and that was my riding jacket. Over the years I have gone out of my way to coordinate my riding apparel and bikes so they are color matched and blended. A year or so ago I felt a that a combination of my aging riding skills and the propensity for everyone else on the road to be texting, playing video games or overwhelmed in a minivan with a parcel of children that conspicuity was more important than fashion. After some searching I settled on an Olympia Expedition jacket in Hi-Vis Yellow and black. The main feature I bought it for were the very large vent panels front rear and sleeves. These were quite effective for ventilation during the warmer riding days. It is a 3 season jacket with a removable padded thermal layer and removable rain shell. The shell can be worn inside or outside of the jacket and has a hood. I had not had need to use the shell before but prior to leaving LDOS I put it outside the jacket with the hood up and underneath my helmet. Miraculously with my full face helmet closed tight I remained completely dry at 70 - 80 on the highway among quite a bit of traffic. At least I was dry down to my feet. Gasolina boots are not waterproof. The combination of the large vents and the dual utility of the rain shell have made this jacket very practical for most circumstances. I have always bought Revit jackets in the past and I believe there overall finish is better but the Olympia Expedition provides great versatility. Just tossing this out if anyone is looking at replacement jacket for Christmas. So I am looking for some help regarding sealing a fuel tank. My new RT has a very nice tank which I have kept covered with a full sleeve. Rather than keep the good tank on the bike I have found a second tank in good condition as a replacement. The second tank has no rust but the sealant coating on the inside is flaking off. Not sure if this is the original coating or something was added. The color is a reddish brown similar to my other tank. In my research it appears the products from KBS or PQR look like they would be suitable for a resealing operation. If anyone has had some experience with these products could you help me answer a few questions. As there is no rust would the degreaser be enough preparation for a final coating? Is the degreaser likely to remove the balance of the original coating? This would be preferable. Will the sealer bond to the existing coating if all of it does not get removed during the degreasing process? Is there something that would remove all vestiges of the original liming? Any recommendation for the best product for this task? One final thing for those who care to mark their Calendar the Annual Technobarn Tech Day will be April 20th 2019. I've used the red "Dragon's Blood" for sealing a tank a few years back and was very satisfied with the results. These are generally two part epoxy sealers. Some great products here, concise directions and good customer support. Check them out at: https://www.caswellplating.com As I recall, navigating their site successfully may require downloading the app. You mentioned KBS, I've used their paints and coatings for automotive applications and know they make quality stuff. I've no experience with their tank sealer. So there's my two cents.
