Earlier this year we talked about an extended ride north to the RA Rally and taking four or five days to spend riding up there and using the event as a base camp. June is booked for me, but there are some good events in June hat can be made into multi-day rides in June. Airheads at the Aerodrome and the Gathering of the Clans Rally are you excellent with a.lot of great riding to, from, and around the rallies. A few years ago I rode to the Aerodrome with Victor Green and we did a day ride through the Catskills. I also went the year before that and took two days to ride back heading west through the Catskills and Woodstock, NY then south through the middle of PA with stops at World's End State Park in PA. All of Western North Carolina is awesome! If people want to ditch the RAnand dona big loop ride in July I am open to that as well. Whatever each person decides, get out there and do some riding! Our Sliced Cycle project bike is now in the care of Tom Longobardi. Perhaps your tech weekend could be another step in the journey for its continued assembly and embellishment. Something I would enjoy being a part of. We continue to have many ideas for how to make it a more complete and intruiging display piece. While on display at Bob?s BMW last weekend it proved to be something people enjoyed seeing. For those of us who worked the Maryland Airheads vendor space, an enjoyable and encouraging conversation ensued. Continued enthusiasm for the project is warranted. To get the drivetrain set in motion is paramount. Continued efforts with the lighting and electrics is also something that a solid techday could improve upon. Much to learn. Steve has some neat vintage BMW's and collectibles that are quite nice and rare. The tech day will take place in a 2-bay garage, with one lift, and plenty of space (gravel driveway) outside. If you have a more complex project, contact Jean Lachaud (jean at beheme.info) ahead of time, so that any special tools and other requirements can be arranged, if possible. A Grok Harmonizer carb tool for synching and adjusting carbs will be available, as well as electrical supplies and tools. As always, remember to bring your own fluids and parts, and special tools if you need them. If a parts run is necessary, Mount Kisco is about 35 minutes and 2 lights from Max BMW store in Brookfield, CT, which closes at 3 pm on Saturdays. ** PLEASE RSVP **: Let us know you're coming so we can plan for enough food! We'll start around 9am with bagels and custom roasted coffee by coffee importer Steve Bauer, and later a grill lunch (dogs and burgers, sodas, etc.) A $10 contribution for food & beverages is requested. Best route North/South is the Saw Mill River Parkway to the Mount Kisco exit (No. 34), go West (left turn) on Route 133 to Crow Hill, go North (right turn) on Crow Hill at the white church to the stop sign, then left (still Crow Hill Road) to the first right on Woodland Road. It is a gravel road so drive slowly. Follow the signs at the pond to 14. Total from SMRP exit is about a mile. . Also possible is via Route 100 to Crow Hill (heading East) to Woodland Road. After making sure all else was in good order with a journey to Appomattox VA for the Horizon Unlimited gathering I tackled the gearbox issue. With help from Duane Wilding and some tricks learned from Robs gearbox removal and spline lube tech day in PA the gearbox removal went very smoothly. Glad I chose to do the full removal as the spline was remarkable rusty. Combine with the spline rust was the corresponding rust on the clutch plate housing. With the clutch removed I was able to remove the rust from the offending parts and was also able to use the clutch plate to slide back and forth over the spline to distribute the lubrication evenly. The other critical factor in removing the gearbox was it enabled me to remove the clutch actuating rod. Though the end closest to the release bearing piston was well lubricated the end closest to the clutch had dried up grease and was binding badly. Reassembly was mostly straightforward. Having a second person, Duane returned for more, made things go a lot easier. Apart from the usual struggle with the drive shaft bolts the job was over in short order. The test ride did not happen for two days but the difference in shifting was transformative. The bike now shifts with a positive "snick" with little or no resistance either up or down. Now it shifts better than any other airhead I have ridden. I took my time and incorporated other items at the same time so the bike was on the lift for a week. However if all you want to do is gearbox removal, spline lube and reassembly its less than a day's job if the parts are on hand. See you at the next gathering. Pulling the transmission to grease the transmission splines is not the most fun maintenance task to contemplate. I was forced into it years ago for the same maintenance issue you discovered with the clutch disk actuating rod. In my case, suddenly no clutch action!! The rod had accumulated gunk that compacted around the shaft and prevented any movement. One minute I could shift and the next not. So in the course of what I thought would be a spline lube, which turned out to be fine, the culprit was something else entirely. And now that you have recent experience I might call you to help me reinstall my transmission which I took out months ago awaiting time in my life to examine and fix a few internal issues. Still waiting for that time so it will not be too soon. If nobody expresses interest, I will go to other lists and possibly eBay but I would rather see this bike go to someone I know. Doing this allowed the transmission to slide into its 'sweet spot' for alignment with the splines and drive shaft. There is some small measure of play in how all of components mate up. It is supposed to make the motorcycle smoother. There are also similar 'tricks' that can be done when installing a clutch plate (on 1980 and older bikes) to make the engine run more smoothly. Since there is some play in the bolts that hold it in place. I used a dial gauge to measure the 'run out' on the clutch when I replaced mine to ensure it was centered on the crankshaft. Next week we will construct the block pig cooker in Mike and Sue DiPietro's yard, source a pig and some beef, haul in a half cord of seasoned oak and get everything set up. Then Friday June 1st we will start the pig and let it cook slowly for about twenty hours... In addition to the pig we plan to roast a big slab of beef and we will have some hot dogs for the kids. We will also have music and bunch of picnic tables for the event. Come early, stay late. Many of you are likely aware that this is the same weekend as the Square Route Rally in Thurmont, MD hosted by the BMWBMW riders. If you want to ride down out of the mountains for the afternoon and eat some barbecue and then head back that's fine with us. If you want to ride down, and sleep on the floor in my house or pitch your tent in the back yard, that's fine too- just let me know in advance of your intentions. First come first served... If you can make it let us know. Please bring a side dish to share and what you would like to drink. We'll have our canoe full of ice again this year for your beverages. We'll also have non-alcoholic beverages. This is a kid-friendly neighborhood party. We will have yard games set up for children and adults to enjoy. Details: 3:00ish PM until ? Address: 90 W Green Street Westminster, Maryland 21157 (three houses up the street from where we live) Give us a head's up if you're coming so we can gauge if we need to increase the size of the pig we must secure... I've had heated grip bars for Japanese bikes where the ends of the bars were not the same diameter as the center section where the bars sit in the clamps. The ends were reduced in diameter slightly in order to keep the heated grips close to the same diameter as the stock ones so you didn't feel like you replaced your stock grips with the fat end of a baseball bat. Found where I should make sure I get BMW friendly 22mm diameter bars and not 7/8" ones but haven't found anything about changes in bar end diameters for different type grips.
