Howdy All,


Taking a break from the heat to watch some World Cup soccer.  And speaking of heat, as I get closer to putting the R80 on the road, how well do Airhead engines manage the heat they generate?  Other air-cooled bikes I've had were hit and miss...some shed heat real well as long as moving forward but were really terrible performers in stop & go / city traffic...others you couldn't get to overheat if you blasted them with a blowtorch.


Part hunting on eBay, I've seen the occasional stock oil coolers from R100s, etc and wondered how much value they are in terms of heat management.  Obviously the bike has to be moving for them to be fully effective but they do get oil from a hot block to cooler air even when standing at a stop light.


R80 going smoothly...serviced front suspension, swapped in progressive springs, handlebars, grips, front brakes rebuilt.  Cleaning up rusty corroded spokes / front hub currently.  Clean up of rear wheel/hub is about the only major item left.  Front caliper weeps a little from metal brake line fitting...may have to consider new line.


Heat issue has been on my mind due to the current temps and due to the idea that most of my preliminary riding will be commuting and local area shakedown rides to catch whatever gremlins I've missed.

You don't need an oil cooler. Airhead engines shed heat well and even in
stop and go traffic they are fine. I've ridden mine through Texas in 100+
degree temps and never had an issue. I would keep the bike stock with
regard to cooling.

No worries about needing a oil cooler on your R80 Kevin.
If it really needed it BMW would have put one on it like some of the other 
models that do come with it.

Fwiw.......I've been monitoring oil temps on my R90S-RS since 1985.  For ten yrs 
before that it was a AMA Battle of Twins race bike.  BMW didn't put a oil cooler 
on the R90S and it still doesn't have one today.

I run a oil dipstick thermometer. In 25+ yrs and 69,000 miles Oil temps have 
never gone above 250 F even in 115 degrees in Las Vegas.  All other ambient 
temps here in the DC area it never gets above 225 F running the bike between 
5k--7k rpm for 1--2 hrs. 225 is ideal for all sorts of reasons oil needs to get 
this hot to do it's job properly and rid itself of condensation.

I can recommend you use a name brand 20w--50 100% full synthetic motorcycle oil 
that is JASO MA rated that will be right on the bottle.  When it gets below 20 
degrees F I suggest you use the same oil quality but drop down to 10w--40.

I'll not start a endless debate here on why this is important......but I've been 
studying motorcycle oils since the late 80's directly from oil engineers, racers 
and many high level BMW Airhead shops on the east coast and west. For instance 
Ted Porter's "The Beemer Shop", who was Service Manager of Bob's BMW for 15 yrs) 
and my son worked for Ted for 5 yrs rebuilding and servicing Airhead motors. 
All theses shops see thousands of Airhead engines + everything under the sun 
when it comes to oils people put in their Airheads and the consequences.  All 
agree any top level 20w--50 full synthetic JASO MA rated oil is what the Airhead 
was designed and made for from 20 degrees to 130 degrees F ambient.

Went with Golden Spectro 4 20w-50 Semi-Synthetic...based on the oil article on Snowbum's site.


Bel-Ray 10W for the front forks...looking for a little stiffer ride than the 7.5W the manual recommended.

It's later than usual for our annual Rolling Rally , but better late than
never.

Every year we talk about adding another day and since I haven't been on a
long ride this year I thought I'd try to do a thousand miles over the
course of four and a half days.

As many of you know, the RA rally is the weekend of July 20-21 in
Wellsboro, PA.

Right now I am thinking about heading out Wednesday afternoon towards
Micheaux State Forest just to set the mood and then putting in four days of
riding with a Sunday evening return.

I'd like to head either head north and west toward the Allegheny National
Forest for camping Thursday evening and then loop east acriss the top of PA
or southern mid-NY towards Wellsboro with a Saturday mid day arrival, and
Sunday departure for home...

OR perhaps head for the Catskills over the course of Thursday and Friday
and then swing back south and west to Wellsboro on Saturday. It will be a
trip that is primarily about riding with close to 300 mile days and with
camping innational forests or campgrounds like we normally do. If any of
you want to motel it... you can meet up with us in the mornings or
somewhere along the way..

Anyone want to join the fun?

A visit on Aug 25 @ 10 AM has been arranged to see Jim Hopkin's Museum in
Clarksville, MD, see

Click "Mission" in the above link, to see what his museum is all about; it
is people oriented, but you will see the fastest BMW motorcycle (an S1000RR
from San Diego BMW), several R90Ss a 1927 BMW and other BMW motorcycles, as
well as the helmet that Reg Pridmore wore during his win of the 1976
Superbike Championship, and* everything* in between.

It is a remarkable museum.

Jim has made several expansions to his home over the years, which is where
the museum is housed, and has greatly increased the number of items on
display.
It is likely the best and most extensive exhibit in the world of all things
"BMW motorcycle people", and is not to be missed.

As invitees to Jim's home, he is requesting we tell him how many will be
attending as he will have drinks for each of us when we arrive, he will
conduct the tour and then he will serve us a casual lunch and something
sweet.

How great is that?

*We must give Jim a headcount, so please let me know by Aug 19 if you will
attend.* Some minor changes after that will be accommodated if possible,
but plan on either letting me know you will attend by Aug 19, or plan a
trip for another time.

AND
*Note the location of Jim's house*, it is west of and between Baltimore and
Washington, DC; Google maps says getting there from eastern PA for
instance, takes one down I95 and all the very heavy traffic by Baltimore,
etc.

I will travel west and go through Ephrata, then south and sneak up on
Clarksville, MD from the west, it is only a little longer but a much less
congested route.

Everyone is invited, so yes, bring a friend, but do include them with your
headcount. This invite will also go out to the MD and NJ Airheads.

I have been working with the organizers of this event to try and make it more affordable.Unfortunately pitching a tent is not an option.However, if we can get 3 people into a Junior King Suite, the price is $363.Considering that this includes:1) 2 nights lodging2) 2 dinners3) 2 breakfast4) 2 guided rides in the Laurel Highlands5) an Alan Cathcart presentation.6) Swag from Golden Spectro?

Alan,

I?ve been kicking this one around for some time until I found out they want $600 for one person.  That?s  is extremely salty and has had me backing off altogether.  I have given  thought about riding out to Seven Springs on Friday or Saturday and meeting the crew in the parking lot and kicking tires after all it?s not every day you get to chat with Alan Cathcart and to some lesser extent, Richard Backus.  I do believe Motorcycle Classics is one of the best overall magazine in print today with some of the best moto journalist. 

 

In my case, I would pitch a tent and be happy to eat at a local diner, to be able to hang out with these guys,  but I would miss the presentation by Alan Cathcart. 

 

Alan, we need to sneak an advance surveillance crew into the lodge and set up hidden camera in the auditorium or dining facility to record the presentations.

 

The other factor is the weather.  If it rains that weekend and the rides get canceled, that?s a lot of money spent to hear a presentation, even if it is Alan Cathcart.

 

$363/head has me thinking harder and leaning further.

Motorcycle Classics hooked me up directly with the hotel.? Seems as though they really liked the previous years' groups and realize that classic motorcyclist are pretty frugal.

Glen,

Right now it's just you and me starting Wednesday evening! Duane may join
us for Wednesday evening, but has not fully committed.

For Wednesday night I've been looking at Caledonia State Park in the heart
of the Michaux Forest.  If we can get up there early enough we can visit
the ranger station and get the low-down on where the primitive no-fee
camping areas are, otherwise we can find a site in one of the developed
areas.  I'd like to leave Westminster by 4:00 if possible which would put
me up there before 5:30 PM.  That will give a few hours of light to set
camp and get some dinner together.

We can meet in Gettysburg or somewhere around there.  I need your number,
so send it to me or just text my cell phone.

Then Thursday we can ride up and into the Allegheny National Forest.  Both
our bikes will do well on fire roads, so if you're open to it we can let
some air out of the tires to soften the ride and do some low speed
exploring. Then we'll camp wherever we choose at the end of the day.

Friday is whatever we want to do. I like the terrain along southern tips of
the Finger Lakes, but am unfamiliar with some of the northern central PA
areas and wouldn't mind doing some looking around there.  Whatever looks
good.

Saturday to the RA Rally for some afternoon camaraderie...

Then back to the grind Sunday.

If anyone wants to join in we can set up some rendezvous points.

Morning lads and lassies. The wedding is done. It was wonderful. Bridget came down with an horrendous stomach flu around 4 am Sunday. We had a houseful of hungover wedding guests. Fortunately including Kathleen who conjured up a sterling breakfast. After they left around 1pm I cleaned up till about 5:30 when I tore my calf open on the tractor and went to Rightime and got 20 stitches. 
The grandchildren are here through the 25th. 
We are still on the possible list but will be there if we can. 
The idea of listening to a classical guitarist is very appealing but it?s possible the guitar strings may turn to rust in the presence of Pabst Blue Ribbon. Perhaps we could suggest gut strings and a guitar rendition of Rocky Top as an appeasement. 
Mark the decision is firmly in your court. 
Hope to see everyone.

60 gallon tank, 10.2 cfm @ 90 psi, 3.7hp motor,240volt single phase,15fla. I had this on a 20 amp breaker with no issues.Oil is weeping from around the sight glass, nothing serious just a nuisance.Compressor is? four years old and was only used in my shop for tires,air tools and occasional bead blasting. Oil changed yearly Other than the oil weeping no issues.$250
Harbor Freight bead blast cabinet 
Four years old. I would recommend coating the inside with truck bed coating or something similar to stop the leaks. Works exactly as it should .$50

 Jim,It was a blastexcept for Sat night from 9 pm till just before dawn. It was a deluge resulting in an area wide power outage. But buy 8 am the drizzle and the last of it was done. The riding up there is terrific. I used to live in NJ at the Wellsboro area for 50 miles in all directions was a favorite stomping ground. It was nice to go back there again. Also seeing alot of riders I hadn't seen in several years was a added treat. 

What was real interesting is that next years RA will be in Woodstock VA which is 1 hr north of me. I THINK its in Sept. Sorry on not knowing the specific dates but if anyone can respond to this email on the dates it would be appreciated.

 Great time with fine riding.The RA really stepped up this time.

Yes, the 2019 RA Rally is in Woodstock, VA, the weekend after Finger Lakes Rally.
I tried to meet some MD Airheads, but none were about during the times I went by Airhead Central.

Three great days of riding on the Backcountry Discovery Ride trail, interesting bikes, people, activities and presentations at the rally. Well worth the trip and some rain riding on the way home.

We stopped in at the rally around 4 on Sat as the rain started.  I stopped in at Airhead Central - look comfy and welcoming. As usual! Had an 1100 miles blast through North Western PA down to Johnstown last night . AMAZING roads and a fabulous ride. Let me say that 144 in particular is a world beater. Period.

   Hey rally goers and all who would have liked to make a long weekend of riding with the excuse of a rally to attend.  Myself, Mark and two other riders made our way there.  We would have enjoyed sticking around for a while, but, on our arrival, it began to rain.  We chose to keep riding with our overnight accommodation as our target.  The next day found us passing through Wellsboro on US route 6.  At the small town of Galeton we turned South on PA Rt 144.  Fueled up in Renovo then onto Snow Shoe where the magnificent 144 ran out.   As Mark mentioned, 144 is a gem.  We considered, while in the neighborhood, turning around and riding it back the other way.  Time, as always changed our minds.  Johnstown overnight, home by noon. 

  With a rally as an excuse, four great riding days were enjoyed.

Announcement: the IBMWR marketplace is back up and running!

The ibmwr.org web site has been completely rebuilt on Wordpress, and the
new marketplace lets you post photos. Unfortunately, there is now a $2.00
charge to advertise items for sale...which goes to pay for site hosting.
It's still a 100% volunteer BMW club and organization

It is indeed. I joined the crew to help out and moved the Airhead tech articles over. There are some good articles in there, but clearly new, regular content additions is the intention, so if you have something to contribute, drop me a line.
