We are located in south-central PA about twenty miles north of the MD line at the foot of South Mtn. near York Springs. Perhaps some of the Marylanders will join us, all are welcome from wherever you call home. Hoping to have some "keepers of the knowledge" present to assist with repairs or maintenance. Most standard and some special tools here, contact me if you have a need and arrangements can be made to have required tools available. Oft times now these affairs are more of a social gathering and less about wrenching and that is fine as well. Plenty of room and we'll keep the pool open! I will have table space available to sell any parts or gear (I'm emptying some shelves), clean out that horde of Motorrad gold and bring it, pass it on to a Club member. We're located at: 2081 County Line Rd. York Springs, PA 17372. Look for the ABC sign! Some notice you're coming will help in planning food and refreshments. Coffee/donuts in the morning and something good for lunch. If you already registered, thank you. I'll put a list together of registrations received and email it out at the beginning of September after Labor Day. All the Best, Will Andalora Maryland Airmarshal ABC 11737 410.596.0812 www.airheads.org LAST DAYS OF SUMMER The Maryland Airheads invite all Airheads, riders and passengers on airheads, and all who enjoy motorcycling to the Last Days of Summer. This is our fifth year hosting the event! This year, feel free to show up again Thursday to pitch camp, enjoy the evening, and then spend a full day riding Friday. The area offers fantastic pavement riding and Green Ridge State Park to the south and east offers plenty of gravel for GS riders. We?ll be at the Little Orleans Campground again where we have secured the same large group tent-camping area and pavilion for gathering, relaxing, and general merriment. RV and cabin sites are also available, but you need to contact the campground directly to secure a separate if you want to go that route. We?ll be ready to go starting around noon on Thursday, September 20th with coolers for beverages, but?s that about it. That evening we will probably ride a short distance to Bill?s Place in Little Orleans for dinner, or you can do whatever you like. The idea is to get out there a day early and get some more riding in on Friday. We will provide dinner Friday and Saturday evenings, and we?ll have coffee and lite breakfasts all Saturday and Sunday mornings. Not sure what we?ll serve this year, but if the last two years are any indication, it should be worth the ride. Getting there from just about anywhere should be a lot of fun. Interstate 68 runs east / west about six miles north of Little Orleans, but that?s probably the least interesting way to get there. GPS coordinates for Little Orleans, according to Garmin?s City Navigator, are N39 37.717 W78 23.369. That will get you close. From Little Orleans, take Orleans RD SE northwest out of town. Bear right/north onto Oldtown Orleans RD SE. After about a ? mile make a right hand turn into the campground. The campground?s website is: http://www.littleorleanscampground.com/ Their address is: 31661 Green Forest Dr., S.E., Little Orleans, MD 21766 and their phone number is: 301-478-2325 The cost for the weekend is $45.00. We limit the registration 60 people which helps maintain a casual uncrowded atmosphere, and a manageable number for food preparation. We?ll also have rally T-shirts available for $15.00 while they last, unless you pre-order which guarantees you get the size you want. MD Airmarshal Will Andalora is handling the registration again this year. Send him a check or pay via PayPal (please use pay option to pay a friend to avoid service charges - MarylandAirheads at gmail.com). Make checks payable to Maryland Airheads and mail them to 84 ? W Green Street, Westminster, MD 21157. Please include your email address and phone number, so we can reach out to you if needed. Jim McKinna usually makes a series of GPS mapped riding routes available for download. We may also be able to get some off-road routes for folks this year. We also push out information through email as the event approaches, so your contact information is helpful for that. Any questions, just email Will at MarylandAirheads at gmail.com or call him at (410) 596-0812. So I decided to go ahead and remove both exhaust pipes. They're pretty rusty. I also wanted to make sure they hadn't rusted into the exhaust ports. The left side exhaust nut came off smooth as butter. Right side loosened a couple turns and then would not budge. Having paid attention to advice passed along in the prior tech sessions I've attended, I went ahead and cut the exhaust nut off rather than force it off. Found the reason it hung up was some slight damage to a thread as you can see in the attached photo. I'm guessing it happened during a removal by a previous owner. Looks to me like I should be able to clean it up with a die since the damage isn't too severe or too extensive. Is this the recommended course of action? If so, anybody know what size die to use and possibly a source that sells them? Kevin -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... This one is Size= M52 x 2. Suitable for all R2V models from /5 to R100, NOT the R45 and R65. Check the applications tab. I haven't checked anywhere else so I don't know if $180 is a good price for the quality of this one. Boxer2Valve also sells a metric thread file. http://www.boxer2valve.com/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=bmw2valve&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=6440226 Given the price of $43, I would personally try it first if the threads aren't too bad: I have not tried this tool but I watched the video of William using it, and it seemed pretty easy. Others may have different opinions. The damage looking at the photo is certainly minimal and could be addressed by using an appropriate file and some careful dressing. A die is the best way to go. I did a quick online check and you can find 52 X 2 mm dies on ebay for around $65. Deeper digging may get you a used one for less. If you use either go slowly and I recommend just use the die by hand. It's all it should need. I damaged my exhaust threads so bad I was sure they needed to be cut off and remachined. Called my buddy Ted Porter (The Beemer Shop) and he reminded me about thread files. 20 mins later I had 90% of the thread in excellent shape......right on the bike.....nothing else. Done. Use lots of Nickel based anti-seize......lots......and work the exhaust nut ALL the way on before you put the pipe on......then go back and forth ......back and forth to get the anti-seize well worked into the threads. Wipe off the excess and install the exhaust. Also use anti-seize on all slip-fits and nuts and bolts. Everything gets anti-seize. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark Singer I would try repairing with a thread file first, before taking a die to it. Be patient, slow and steady does win some races. A careful hand should be sufficiant for bringing definition back to the misshapen portions. Neither file nor die will restore the pitch to its full major diameter. But a proper shape can be restored without spending a buck. All ISO Metric threads are set at 60 degrees. Most every triangle shaped file on the planet is also set at 60 degrees. Aluminum is quick to clog the cutting surface of a file. A coarse single cut is best, rub chalk on the file first, this will help prevent it from becoming clogged with every stroke. As Mike has mentioned, use the new nut to further caress the repaired threads. Happy fiddling. I like to thank everyone ,I got lots of good advise ,specially from Dave fish (PA airhead) who told me not to be afraid , he was right, this seems impressive but it is not too complicated if you have the right tools . I fabricated in a few minutes a tool to block the flywheel with scrap aluminum ( the special tool made for this job did not work for the GS and is way over what is needed in my opinion). the clutch tention release screws were found in the shop and it took the better part of a couple of hours to finish. (Jim had the seal pushing tool with him.) Thanks a million to all who responded. I knew that I could count on you. I am looking forward to be returning the favor. I just wanted to give a quick thanks to those who recently took Route 144 and posted about it on the list. I had the chance to go through that way last weekend and I'm very grateful for the advice. Took that highway from the bottom to the top on my GS while the wife trudged along behind us. Her X1 is zippy, but that is a MOTORCYCLE road. :-) And if anyone is eyeing a trip through there in the future, we found a lovely little B&B very close to the southern end of PA 144. It's called Earlystown Manor Bed and Breakfast. Not far from State College. Nice place with really great owner / operators. Allowed us a great rest and to get a good, refreshed start to that road the next morning. Enjoy the rest of the riding season, everyone! Sorry I won't be able to make it to LDoS (again) this year. I'll be in Congo and Mali during those dates.
