Just a heads up.
My wife who is extremely careful with all of this, masks and cleaning, etc,
worked only part time through it, tested positive two weeks ago.   We got
tested on our own just because we were going to visit my new grandson.
Both of us had no symptoms. We are both good.  We still had to quarantine
and stay separated in our house.
Lots of cases breaking out.
Take the necessary precautions and stay safe !

Delaware Valley Norton Riders

Meeting Update for Third Sunday November 15.

President George waited as long as he felt appropriate to see if Sunday
would be a day that we could meet outside. Presently it looks like we will
be getting some rain in the early afternoon so Pres George made an
executive decision to cancel the meeting because of the risk of spreading
Covid19 at an indoor gathering. Montgomery Co. has reported 1,093 new Covid
cases and 7 deaths over the last week. Serious Business. No Meeting!

We did have nominations of officers at our October meeting which is
reported below. At present there is one nominee for each of the three
executive offices. When we hold our next meeting we can have a vote by
acclamation unless another candidate presents themselves. With no
opposition that will conclude the election. Until our next meeting David
should serve as acting President.

Bob Katz who was prepared to host this month?s meeting will be working on
gremlins lurking deep inside his Combat in his garage on Sunday. Bob says
you are welcome do drop in but give him a heads up if you are coming. Masks
would be a good idea. Bob?s # 215-416-6762

Christmas Party 2020

I talked with Tom Weisel on Wed. about the December Christmas Party. With
the Covid cases on the rise Tom does not want to take the chance on having
a group of people inside his home for the Christmas gathering. It?s likely
to be prohibited by the PA state guidelines if the covid cases continue to
rise. Tom has offered to host the party in 2021 instead. We will all be
waiting to see when we can gather again.

October 18 2020 Meeting Notes

President George notified the members via email that the October membership
meeting would be held at the Riverside Bar and Grille on Rt. 611 above
Easton starting at Noon on Oct 18.

18 Members rode to the meeting on a cool crisp morning under clear sunny
skies. We had outdoor seating at tables for 6 or 8 under a large canopy.
The Delaware River was moving swiftly at the edge of the property and the
railroad tracks lay silent.

The food orders were placed and Pres George called the members to order.
The first order of business was the nomination of officers for 2021. George
had stated in his email that it was time for a new person to step up to
serve as Pres. A short discussion was held and Pat Daloisio was nominated.
Pat was not present to accept or reject the nomination. David Behnken was
nominated for Pres. David accepted the nomination. Nominations were open
for Treasurer. Dan Sellers was nominated. Dan accepted for another term. No
other nominations were presented. Nominations were opened for Recording
Secretary / AMA Legislative Officer. Ken Kopec was nominated for another
term. Ken was not present to accept or reject the nomination. A question
came up about electing the Road Captain. Pres Geo noted that the Road
Captain is appointed by the President and not elected. Nominations were
closed.

Post meeting note. Treasurer Dan contacted Pat Daloisio and Ken Kopec the
following day to confirm their acceptance of the nomination. Pat rejected
the nomination. Ken accepted the nomination.  That leaves the election with
3 candidates and 3 offices. Election will be held at the next meeting
scheduled for November 15 at meeting host Bob Katz?s home. (This meeting
has been postponed).

Member Richard Casey suggested that the club could or should have a vice
President. Dan stated the the club Constitution designated only three
elected officers. The constitution could be modified using one of the
methods under Robert?s Rules of Order. Perhaps the rule could include a
lifetime appointment by the person proposing such a change. This will be
discussed further at the next meeting.

The subject of the 2020 DVNR Christmas Party was brought up. Tom Weisel had
offered to host the party early this the year. The question was raised
regarding the safety of an indoor event with a large crowd. Many Christmas
parties get as many as 50 attendees. Bruce questioned the number but I can
confirm the head count over several years where there were 50 or more
attendees. Of course we would have to see what the Governors rule will be
in early December but a majority present had no fear of Covid19 virus. Host
Tom Weisel who was not present will have to make the final decision. Post
meeting note: No Christmas Party.

Todd Robertson offered to host the February 2021 meeting at his home in
Phillipsburg NJ. Thank you Todd.

No further busisness was presented and the Pres. Called for a motion to
adjourn. The members enjoyed a nice lunch on a great day for a ride. We had
a spirited ride home.

We did have nominations of officers at our October meeting which is reported below. At present there is one nominee for each of the three executive offices. When we hold our next meeting we can have a vote by acclamation unless another candidate presents themselves. With no opposition that will conclude the election. Until our next meeting David should serve as acting President.

I talked with Tom Weisel on Wed. about the December Christmas Party. With the Covid cases on the rise Tom does not want to take the chance on having a group of people inside his home for the Christmas gathering. It?s likely to be prohibited by the PA state guidelines if the covid cases continue to rise. Tom has offered to host the party in 2021 instead. We will all be waiting to see when we can gather again.

President George notified the members via email that the October membership meeting would be held at the Riverside Bar and Grille on Rt. 611 above Easton starting at Noon on Oct 18.
 
18 Members rode to the meeting on a cool crisp morning under clear sunny skies. We had outdoor seating at tables for 6 or 8 under a large canopy. The Delaware River was moving swiftly at the edge of the property and the railroad tracks lay silent.
 
The food orders were placed and Pres George called the members to order. The first order of business was the nomination of officers for 2021. George had stated in his email that it was time for a new person to step up to serve as Pres. A short discussion was held and Pat Daloisio was nominated. Pat was not present to accept or reject the nomination. David Behnken was nominated for Pres. David accepted the nomination. Nominations were open for Treasurer. Dan Sellers was nominated. Dan accepted for another term. No other nominations were presented. Nominations were opened for Recording Secretary / AMA Legislative Officer. Ken Kopec was nominated for another term. Ken was not present to accept or reject the nomination. A question came up about electing the Road Captain. Pres Geo noted that the Road Captain is appointed by the President and not elected. Nominations were closed.
 
Post meeting note. Treasurer Dan contacted Pat Daloisio and Ken Kopec the following day to confirm their acceptance of the nomination. Pat rejected the nomination. Ken accepted the nomination.? That leaves the election with 3 candidates and 3 offices. Election will be held at the next meeting scheduled for November 15 at meeting host Bob Katz?s home. (This meeting has been postponed).
 
Member Richard Casey suggested that the club could or should have a vice President. Dan stated the the club Constitution designated only three elected officers. The constitution could be modified using one of the methods under Robert?s Rules of Order. Perhaps the rule could include a lifetime appointment by the person proposing such a change. This will be discussed further at the next meeting.
 
The subject of the 2020 DVNR Christmas Party was brought up. Tom Weisel had offered to host the party early this the year. The question was raised regarding the safety of an indoor event with a large crowd. Many Christmas parties get as many as 50 attendees. Bruce questioned the number but I can confirm the head count over several years where there were 50 or more attendees. Of course we would have to see what the Governors rule will be in early December but a majority present had no fear of Covid19 virus. Host Tom Weisel who was not present will have to make the final decision. Post meeting note: No Christmas Party.
 
Todd Robertson offered to host the February 2021 meeting at his home in Phillipsburg NJ. Thank you Todd.
 
No further busisness was presented and the Pres. Called for a motion to adjourn. The members enjoyed a nice lunch on a great day for a ride. We had a spirited ride home.

Dear DVNR Members,



Bob I hope you are all well.  As some of you have heard, It is with deep
regret that I have to announce that Chris Grimmett passed away November 13th.
Chris had a heart attack when out running on Saturday November 11th and
never regained consciousness.



For those of you who didn?t know Chris, he was the NOC Chairman from 2000
to 2010 and from 2010 to 2016 he was the NOC webmaster and continued to be
an active member of their rally team. He was also a long time member of the
INOA and attended many rallies where he will be remembered for his
knowledge of all things Norton, his funny stories and his love of scotch
which he would carry around in his backpack along with a shot glass and
would share with his fellow Nortoneers.



Bob and I had the pleasure of hosting Chris at our home and we will
remember him always for his friendship.  Words of condolences can be sent
to his wife Sheelagh at:  49 Booth Bed Lane, Crewe, Cheshire UK CW4 8NB.



Please stay safe and Bob and I hope to see you all soon!

as most of you know my combat has been ill for over? 2 years it started with a stutter about 2500rpm to 2800? what i thought was a electrical problem festered over the winter and upon trying to kick it lightly always at first realized that something had seized.? i did notice the usual stains around the bowl and a aromatic smell of gasoline.. nothing abnormal for a norton that sits .? well that was a clue so was a near empty gas tank. the old petcocks leaked down to bowls then on to the head and open valves and into the crankcase. the ethanol gas had a winter lunch on my stator windings and the wax like coating which seized the rotor to the stator. after replacements and? oil change? i put in a trispark ignition new petcocks and fuel line.? still could not get the original carbs to clear out the stutter.? new amal premiers arrived stock with 106/220 and 17 needle jets. this is it then? the engine was rebuilt battery is fresh all new bullet connectors ignition switch clean the grounds had all been done before.? i fired it up this spring and was ready to roll out when a large puddle of oil appeared. .the old head gasket leaked past my silicone barrier between the fins.? a old problem came back.? off with the head to replace it torque and adjust valves.? another test ride and..? ? still had the stutter? .last spring i noticed rust in fuel line? had tank flushed try again? nope rust was in the crevices of tank which was coated years ago now its peeling. off to gt radiator for a month long strip with chemicals and a new coating? this is it? .ok? time to play rough .now i pick up a 20 gallon gas caddy? only ethanol free in vintage bikes.. .after new tank is mounted more test runs adjusting the carbs? ?time to read the plugs... ok change the needle clip to lean it out nope...try 210 main nope try 105 jet nope try 3 1/2 cutaway nope? try 230 nope new plugs on each try too put in 19 needle jet? this is same engine in featherlastic.. that runs perfect....i notice the throttle grip inner sleeve is plastic? cracked ..order a new emgo that is defective they send a replacement..? ?after drilling the ferrule deeper and getting some play adjust carbs.. then a ride? it still stutters at 2600 or so..above 3000 the bike is awesome. i replace the tri spark no change new spark plug wires? no change? retorque heads adjust valves check compression over 125 each? ? some test rides to orlandos and to franconia for breakfast.? a complete carb balance adjustment from a club member helped the bike run great but still the hiccup at 2800 rpm.? after this i put the 106/220 with the 19 needles back in? clip in middle of needle. i measured the needles same, 3 rings measured the 106 jet all perfect...no clogs dirt rust? perfectly clean... took off manifolds and used 1000 paper on granite plate to smooth installed with new manifold gaskets anyway they? did not leak before.? .well the meeting is at my house so guessing this is the topic...last sunday the meeting was cancelled but a emergency covid combat surgical strike team arrived.. the combat was not running on 2 cylinders? the left side has been kicking out stuttering on me for a week now.? we checked the timing good, plugs new,? reset the float bowls, first kick, left side not firing, has juice to it... fuel? not igniting? bowl full of gas... tank off.? throttle grip sticky pull off bar end mirror mount.. wait.. cable splitters are flopping not secured to frame? tie wrap them down adjust them to sync together? ?fire it up first kick.. adjust left side its kicking in. yea yea now its going smooth idle, adjust air screw then? throttle screw.? again? ?seat back on.. and? test ride as the sun sets.. there is no better feeling then when your norton and its owner have merged into one..after blazing thru the neighborhood annoying everyone like a july 4th evening of fireworks i pulled into garage mahal.. surgery was a complete success.? thanks to dr.dan sellers and dr dave behnkin,? supported by fellow nortoneers pat daloisio and bruce mcphail? we had a fine day.. if u want to beat the covid get ur hands dirty with oil and gas from a norton and make it sing again.. also got some great news from my psychiatrist who is refunding all my money , said i could not be helped and there was zero chance of any cure or vaccine.? see ya on the road... bob? ??

Bob...I read the whole episode...twice...ya had me...then ya lost me...

If I understand...

Throttle has single cable...new tube...ferrule drilled out a bit for more slack...ok

Then the single cable goes to a "splitter"...a junction tube...where it splits to two cables going to the carbs...ok

Is THAT where the issue was? 
If so..what was the problem?
One of the lower cables not engaged inside the junction...therefore not pulling the one carb's slide?

Or did I miss it entirely?

  as most of you know my combat has been ill for over  2 years it started with a stutter about 2500rpm to 2800  what i thought was a electrical problem festered over the winter and upon trying to kick it lightly always at first realized that something had seized.  i did notice the usual stains around the bowl and a aromatic smell of gasoline.. nothing abnormal for a norton that sits .  well that was a clue so was a near empty gas tank. the old petcocks leaked down to bowls then on to the head and open valves and into the crankcase. the ethanol gas had a winter lunch on my stator windings and the wax like coating which seized the rotor to the stator. after replacements and  oil change  i put in a trispark ignition new petcocks and fuel line.  still could not get the original carbs to clear out the stutter.  new amal premiers arrived stock with 106/220 and 17 needle jets. this is it then  the engine was rebuilt battery is fresh all new bullet connectors ignition switch clean the grounds had all been done before.  i fired it up this spring and was ready to roll out when a large puddle of oil appeared. .the old head gasket leaked past my silicone barrier between the fins.  a old problem came back.  off with the head to replace it torque and adjust valves.  another test ride and..    still had the stutter  .last spring i noticed rust in fuel line  had tank flushed try again  nope rust was in the crevices of tank which was coated years ago now its peeling. off to gt radiator for a month long strip with chemicals and a new coating  this is it  .ok  time to play rough .now i pick up a 20 gallon gas caddy  only ethanol free in vintage bikes.. .after new tank is mounted more test runs adjusting the carbs   time to read the plugs... ok change the needle clip to lean it out nope...try 210 main nope try 105 jet nope try 3 1/2 cutaway nope  try 230 nope new plugs on each try too put in 19 needle jet  this is same engine in featherlastic.. that runs perfect....i notice the throttle grip inner sleeve is plastic  cracked ..order a new emgo that is defective they send a replacement..   after drilling the ferrule deeper and getting some play adjust carbs.. then a ride  it still stutters at 2600 or so..above 3000 the bike is awesome. i replace the tri spark no change new spark plug wires  no change  retorque heads adjust valves check compression over 125 each    some test rides to orlandos and to franconia for breakfast.  a complete carb balance adjustment from a club member helped the bike run great but still the hiccup at 2800 rpm.  after this i put the 106/220 with the 19 needles back in  clip in middle of needle. i measured the needles same, 3 rings measured the 106 jet all perfect...no clogs dirt rust  perfectly clean... took off manifolds and used 1000 paper on granite plate to smooth installed with new manifold gaskets anyway they  did not leak before.  .well the meeting is at my house so guessing this is the topic...last sunday the meeting was cancelled but a emergency covid combat surgical strike team arrived.. the combat was not running on 2 cylinders  the left side has been kicking out stuttering on me for a week now.  we checked the timing good, plugs new,  reset the float bowls, first kick, left side not firing, has juice to it... fuel  not igniting  bowl full of gas... tank off  throttle grip sticky pull off bar end mirror mount.. wait.. cable splitters are flopping not secured to frame  tie wrap them down adjust them to sync together   fire it up first kick.. adjust left side its kicking in. yea yea now its going smooth idle, adjust air screw then  throttle screw.  again   seat back on.. and  test ride as the sun sets.. there is no better feeling then when your norton and its owner have merged into one..after blazing thru the neighborhood annoying everyone like a july 4th evening of fireworks i pulled into garage mahal. surgery was a complete success.  thanks to dr.dan sellers and dr dave behnkin,  supported by fellow nortoneers pat daloisio and bruce mcphail  we had a fine day.. if u want to beat the covid get ur hands dirty with oil and gas from a norton and make it sing again.. also got some great news from my psychiatrist who is refunding all my money , said i could not be helped and there was zero chance of any cure or vaccine.  see ya on the road... bob

Wow that is a lot of data in a paragraph, but all great stuff, Thanks. 

As an FNG less then a week into my first Norton ownership I am compelled to ask this after the below below set of experiences.  

Does the DVNR ever have TECH days where riders show up and wrench on their rides as well as thoes of others less knowledgeable?
I have been wrenching on various age and nationally bikes since the 80?s  and I have the noton manuals and books etc  but it is always more fun and easer for me to learn from riders that know.

I want to learn how to do the maintenance on my 74 Commando just the basics, carbs, valves adj, oil &filter change, chains primary drive etc. adjusted and I was wondering if there was a protocol to call a tech day to just have experienced hands and eyes around as the work progresses?

I am chasing a few Carb gremlins  that I believe I have on the run  but still this seems like a good way to meet some of ya

I am in Jenkintown PA Just off either 309 or the PATP .

as most of you know my combat has been ill for over  2 years it started with a stutter about 2500rpm to 2800  what i thought was a electrical problem festered over the winter and upon trying to kick it lightly always at first realized that something had seized.  i did notice the usual stains around the bowl and a aromatic smell of gasoline.. nothing abnormal for a norton that sits .  well that was a clue so was a near empty gas tank. the old petcocks leaked down to bowls then on to the head and open valves and into the crankcase. the ethanol gas had a winter lunch on my stator windings and the wax like coating which seized the rotor to the stator. after replacements and  oil change  i put in a trispark ignition new petcocks and fuel line.  still could not get the original carbs to clear out the stutter.  new amal premiers arrived stock with 106/220 and 17 needle jets. this is it then  the engine was rebuilt battery is fresh all new bullet connectors ignition switch clean the grounds had all been done before.  i fired it up this spring and was ready to roll out when a large puddle of oil appeared. .the old head gasket leaked past my silicone barrier between the fins.  a old problem came back.  off with the head to replace it torque and adjust valves.  another test ride and..    still had the stutter  .last spring i noticed rust in fuel line  had tank flushed try again  nope rust was in the crevices of tank which was coated years ago now its peeling. off to gt radiator for a month long strip with chemicals and a new coating  this is it  .ok  time to play rough .now i pick up a 20 gallon gas caddy  only ethanol free in vintage bikes.. .after new tank is mounted more test runs adjusting the carbs   time to read the plugs... ok change the needle clip to lean it out nope...try 210 main nope try 105 jet nope try 3 1/2 cutaway nope  try 230 nope new plugs on each try too put in 19 needle jet  this is same engine in featherlastic.. that runs perfect....i notice the throttle grip inner sleeve is plastic  cracked ..order a new emgo that is defective they send a replacement..   after drilling the ferrule deeper and getting some play adjust carbs.. then a ride  it still stutters at 2600 or so..above 3000 the bike is awesome. i replace the tri spark no change new spark plug wires  no change  retorque heads adjust valves check compression over 125 each    some test rides to orlandos and to franconia for breakfast.  a complete carb balance adjustment from a club member helped the bike run great but still the hiccup at 2800 rpm.  after this i put the 106/220 with the 19 needles back in  clip in middle of needle. i measured the needles same, 3 rings measured the 106 jet all perfect...no clogs dirt rust  perfectly clean... took off manifolds and used 1000 paper on granite plate to smooth installed with new manifold gaskets anyway they  did not leak before.  .well the meeting is at my house so guessing this is the topic...last sunday the meeting was cancelled but a emergency covid combat surgical strike team arrived.. the combat was not running on 2 cylinders  the left side has been kicking out stuttering on me for a week now.  we checked the timing good, plugs new,  reset the float bowls, first kick, left side not firing, has juice to it... fuel  not igniting  bowl full of gas... tank off.  throttle grip sticky pull off bar end mirror mount.. wait.. cable splitters are flopping not secured to frame  tie wrap them down adjust them to sync together   fire it up first kick.. adjust left side its kicking in. yea yea now its going smooth idle, adjust air screw then  throttle screw.  again   seat back on.. and  test ride as the sun sets.. there is no better feeling then when your norton and its owner have merged into one..after blazing thru the neighborhood annoying everyone like a july 4th evening of fireworks i pulled into garage mahal.. surgery was a complete success.  thanks to dr.dan sellers and dr dave behnkin,  supported by fellow nortoneers pat daloisio and bruce mcphail  we had a fine day.. if u want to beat the covid get ur hands dirty with oil and gas from a norton and make it sing again.. also got some great news from my psychiatrist who is refunding all my money , said i could not be helped and there was zero chance of any cure or vaccine.  see ya on the road... bob

Youll get plenty of advice and input and its a great way to get introduced to the personalities of the membership. Probably one reason no one ever seeks my input. Many of the meetings have a tech session component to them, even if unplanned or spontaneous. Usually in March or April prior to the Gathering, there is a more "actual" tech session. Looks like there may be a few folks venturing out for a ride this weekend - so look out for the emails here to get an idea of who may be going and where.

Thanks Brian ,  The bike is rideable but is not perfect but perhaps all that is needed is good long ride to blow out the cob webs in my head as well as the bikes LOL.

I will keep an eye out for posted rides and their locations.

Thanks Brian ,  The bike is rideable but is not perfect but perhaps all that is needed is good long ride to blow out the cob webs in my head as well as the bikes LOL.

I will keep an eye out for posted rides and their locations.

You are inviting input at your own peril!!! Heh-heh. 

Youll get plenty of advice and input and its a great way to get introduced to the personalities of the membership. Probably one reason no one ever seeks my input. Many of the meetings have a tech session component to them, even if unplanned or spontaneous. Usually in March or April prior to the Gathering, there is a more "actual" tech session. Looks like there may be a few folks venturing out for a ride this weekend - so look out for the emails here to get an idea of who may be going and where.

Will meet you at some point Im sure!

As an FNG less then a week into my first Norton ownership I am compelled to ask this after the below below set of experiences.  

Does the DVNR ever have TECH days where riders show up and wrench on their rides as well as thoes of others less knowledgeable?
I have been wrenching on various age and nationally bikes since the 80?s  and I have the noton manuals and books etc  but it is always more fun and easer for me to learn from riders that know.

I want to learn how to do the maintenance on my 74 Commando just the basics, carbs, valves adj, oil &filter change, chains primary drive etc. adjusted and I was wondering if there was a protocol to call a tech day to just have experienced hands and eyes around as the work progresses?

I am chasing a few Carb gremlins  that I believe I have on the run  but still this seems like a good way to meet some of ya

I am in Jenkintown PA Just off either 309 or the PATP .

as most of you know my combat has been ill for over  2 years it started with a stutter about 2500rpm to 2800  what i thought was a electrical problem festered over the winter and upon trying to kick it lightly always at first realized that something had seized.  i did notice the usual stains around the bowl and a aromatic smell of gasoline.. nothing abnormal for a norton that sits .  well that was a clue so was a near empty gas tank. the old petcocks leaked down to bowls then on to the head and open valves and into the crankcase. the ethanol gas had a winter lunch on my stator windings and the wax like coating which seized the rotor to the stator. after replacements and  oil change  i put in a trispark ignition new petcocks and fuel line.  still could not get the original carbs to clear out the stutter.  new amal premiers arrived stock with 106/220 and 17 needle jets. this is it then  the engine was rebuilt battery is fresh all new bullet connectors ignition switch clean the grounds had all been done before.  i fired it up this spring and was ready to roll out when a large puddle of oil appeared. .the old head gasket leaked past my silicone barrier between the fins.  a old problem came back.  off with the head to replace it torque and adjust valves.  another test ride and..    still had the stutter  .last spring i noticed rust in fuel line  had tank flushed try again  nope rust was in the crevices of tank which was coated years ago now its peeling. off to gt radiator for a month long strip with chemicals and a new coating  this is it  .ok  time to play rough .now i pick up a 20 gallon gas caddy  only ethanol free in vintage bikes.. .after new tank is mounted more test runs adjusting the carbs   time to read the plugs... ok change the needle clip to lean it out nope...try 210 main nope try 105 jet nope try 3 1/2 cutaway nope  try 230 nope new plugs on each try too put in 19 needle jet  this is same engine in featherlastic.. that runs perfect....i notice the throttle grip inner sleeve is plastic  cracked ..order a new emgo that is defective they send a replacement..   after drilling the ferrule deeper and getting some play adjust carbs.. then a ride  it still stutters at 2600 or so..above 3000 the bike is awesome. i replace the tri spark no change new spark plug wires  no change  retorque heads adjust valves check compression over 125 each    some test rides to orlandos and to franconia for breakfast.  a complete carb balance adjustment from a club member helped the bike run great but still the hiccup at 2800 rpm.  after this i put the 106/220 with the 19 needles back in  clip in middle of needle. i measured the needles same, 3 rings measured the 106 jet all perfect...no clogs dirt rust  perfectly clean... took off manifolds and used 1000 paper on granite plate to smooth installed with new manifold gaskets anyway they  did not leak before.  .well the meeting is at my house so guessing this is the topic...last sunday the meeting was cancelled but a emergency covid combat surgical strike team arrived.. the combat was not running on 2 cylinders  the left side has been kicking out stuttering on me for a week now.  we checked the timing good, plugs new,  reset the float bowls, first kick, left side not firing, has juice to it... fuel  not igniting  bowl full of gas... tank off.  throttle grip sticky pull off bar end mirror mount.. wait.. cable splitters are flopping not secured to frame  tie wrap them down adjust them to sync together   fire it up first kick.. adjust left side its kicking in. yea yea now its going smooth idle, adjust air screw then  throttle screw.  again   seat back on.. and  test ride as the sun sets.. there is no better feeling then when your norton and its owner have merged into one..after blazing thru the neighborhood annoying everyone like a july 4th evening of fireworks i pulled into garage mahal.. surgery was a complete success.  thanks to dr.dan sellers and dr dave behnkin,  supported by fellow nortoneers pat daloisio and bruce mcphail  we had a fine day.. if u want to beat the covid get ur hands dirty with oil and gas from a norton and make it sing again.. also got some great news from my psychiatrist who is refunding all my money , said i could not be helped and there was zero chance of any cure or vaccine.  see ya on the road... bob

I am getting some conflicting data from the manuals but I want to confirm that the stock needle position on a 74 Norton 850 in the 932 Amals is in the leanest position that is the clip is in the top notch of the three on the slide needle aka.(all the way down).

It was a glorious day for a ride.  The bikes were grand and the company inviting and helpful. Very Nice group or riders. 

I met up with Bob  at his place on my new to me interstate (got it a week ago) got the grand tour (nice bikes there Bob and thanks!) and other then a a bit of fussy starting and the odd stalling here and there on my bike we were on our way on my Norton's first official ride.

I am still dialing the bike in with new premiers and she needs a bit more feddling.  As the ride continued  she got smoother and more responsive.  The staling was addressed with a fast idle 1300-1500rpm   and by the time of the first gas stop, I turned the idle down to 1000-1300 rpm and all was well the rest of the day.  

She still has a few carbureted gremlins  such as RH cylinder running a tad hot ,  and a bit of hunting at idle that may indicate an air leak, binding cables or a need for improved balancing.  I?ll figure it out..LOL

The clutch or clutch cable (or the rider) may also need a but of adjusting as the clutch slipped a bit on hard pulls @ higher RPMs but even that got better as the miles added up. 

It was also noted the 850 smoked a bit but time and miles may address that.  

Over all I really like my new bike, she pulls like a freight train is nimble in the turns for a big bike and man is she pretty..LOL

LOL  I got my (New to me) 850 up to 90mph yesterday and that seems plenty fast enough.  

However, seems she was not happy at 90, (as it was breaking up) so I may have a fuel delivery issue, ( taps to restrictive) or the valves may need a a tad bit of fettling now that she has been ridden hard for the last 300miles heck the timing could be off a bit..  The bike sat a few years in a shed in her past. 

I did mange to get all the fluids changed and only made one error (so far) on the oil tank filter fitting as I missed the rear the seals that was not there when disassembled, my fault. Once ridden I was awarded  a nice  coat of oil on the back RH  of the bike.

Ahh live and learn.  The gear box oil was a ?yucky? with water contamination (chocolate milk)  as well as a bit of alloy sparkly floaters. Despite filling and draining it twice I think I will do it a few or times till all the ?yuck? is gone.    Still the bike shifts very nicely.  


Hope all have a fantastic Thanksgiving day, which  BTW used to be called Evacuation Day celebrating the British evacuating NY during the revolutionary war.  I for one am glad we figured all that stuff out :-)
